Note N217Landowners of Rockingham County in the Year 1789 give name as Philip Keester: It is not certain whether this land purchase was made by Jr. or Sr.; Jr. is more probable, since Jr. died (1835) owning a plantation but Sr.'s will (1834) mentions no land but indicates that Sr. was boarding with his daughter Rebeckah Dedirick.
John Keister came with his wife from Rockingham County, Virginia to Montgomery County, Virginia in 1799. They bought two tracts of land which were recorded May 10, 1800; one tract of 111 acres from the Patton Estate on New River and one of 65 acres from McCall on Tom's Creek, a branch of New River. The estate of Philip Keister, deceased, was recorded in February 1815. The following are among the items listed: shoemakers tools and box, sole leather, saddle and bags, beds and bedclothes, one silver watch, one indian blanket, a pair of fire tongs, one pair spectacles, shaving utensils, a powder horn, combs and pipe, ink stand, bible, a geography, 8 german books, 2 towels, a tablecloth, a deer skin, chest, chamber pot, and one chair. In the name of God Amen. I Philip Keister of the county of Montgomery and state of Virginia, being of perfect health and disposing memory but knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my Last Will and Testament and desire it to be received as such. First I give my body to the dust, and recommend my soul into the hands of a merciful God. As to my worldly property I have seen proper to make the following disposition of the same; After my death I direct in the first place that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid. Secondly my will is that three months after my death all my personal property be sold at public auction to the highest and best bidder, on a credit of nin months, the purchaser giving bond with approved security. And thirdly my will is that twelve months after my decease my land shall in like manner be exposed to public sale upon the following conditions; that is to say, if my executors herein after named see cause to purchase my farm, when sold at public sale they shall pay one thousand dollars for the first payment, which is to be equally divided among my children namely, Polly, Betsy, John, George, and Susanna. They shall after this pay one hundred dollars yearly until the whole amount be paid, which shall also be equally divided among my children as above named. And fourthly my will is that if my Executors shall not buy my plantation, the purchaser, who ever it may be shall pay to my Executor the above named sum of One thousand dollars, to be disposed of by them as above directed and as to the balance of payments, I leave this matter to be regulated by my Executors: nevertheless they shall give to each person as above named their proper share: Fifthly my will is that immaterial who have house, my plantation, the purchaser shall pay the sum of One thousand dollars immediately after the purchase is made. And lastly I constitute and appoint my two sons John and George Keister Executors of this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this fifteenth day of February is the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty four. This last will and Testament of Philip Keister deceased was presented in court and proven by the oaths of Andrew Martin and Matthew Robinson the witnesses thereto subscribed, and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of John Keister one of the Executors therein named who made oath, and together with John Peterman and Adam Wall, his security entered into and acknowledged, a bond in the penalty of three thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs. A certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form George Keister the other executor therin named here in court refused to take upon himself the burden of the execution thereof.
