Francis Kester has German Roots.

Francis Marion Kester was born 01 Jul 1838, Cedar Bluff, Cedar County, Iowa. He is the son of John Kester and Margaret Layson. [1]

Francis moved to Texas in 1859, and returned to Iowa to join up in the Civil War. He enlisted on 11 Aug 1862, into Company A, of the 22nd Iowa Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Corporal. He mustered out of service on 25 Jul 1865.

He moved to Nebraska in 1868, and back to Iowa in 1871.

In Iowa, he married Mary Rate, 01 Sep 1862 in Johnson, Iowa. [2] The marriage ended, and Francis moved away in Apr 1876, to California. He was farming in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County, California.

Francis married again, to Mary Matthews, 09 Sep 1882, in Oso Flaco, San Luis Obispo County, California. [3] [4]

In 1910, they lived in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County, California. Francis and Mary, children Chester, Myron, Bessie, Walter, and Ruth. [5]

Francis passed away 08 Mar 1920, in the County Hospital, San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County, California. He was buried 10 Mar 1920, in the Cayucos Cemetery, Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County, California. The cemetery is now named the Cayucos-Morro Bay Cemetery. [6]

  • Marriage Date of Francis and Mary Rate. Hunt book page 349, has marriage date of "September 1, 1872". Iowa Marriages [2] has the date of 01 Sep 1862, in Johnson, Iowa.
