James W. Kee wrote to Joseph W Kee, "Luck, my grandfather, changed the spelling of his name from Key to Kee. That fact can be found in the records of Chester County."[3] Dr. Gene C. Key in his The Key Family - Deep Roots in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, writes, "Luck was given name. There were heads of households in Virginia named Luck as early as 1658. The Name might have been originally Luch. His unusual name is quite probably derived from one of the Luck neighbors of his father, Martin...Luck was not a nickname." [4]
