Biography

Martha was born in 1846.

  • 1850 U.S.Census: Martha Key, age 6, lived in Henry, Henry County, Tennessee, with parents William, age 42, and Elizabeth, age 35, and siblings Hezekiah, age 10, Charlotte, age 8, Mary, age 4, and Susan F., age 2. William was a farmer, owned real estate valued at $300. Both he and Elizabeth born in North Carolina; children born in Tennessee. Elizabeth could not read/write. [1] NOTE: William Key not found on 1850 Slave Schedule. May assume he did not hold slaves, although other counties in Tennessee did.
  • 1860 U.S. Census: Martha E.Key, age 14, lived in the 12th District, Henry, Tennessee, with parents William, age 50, and Elizabeth, age 46, and siblings Charlotte J., 20, Hezekiah S., 17, Mary A., 13, and Susan F., 9. William's occupation was farmer, realestate valued at $2000, personal property valued at $800. William and Elizabeth both born in North Carolina, children all born in Tennessee. Under attended school within the year is the number 4, so apparently the 4 youngest children attended school.[2] NOTE: Age discrepancies between 1850 & 1860 census' unexplained: William, by 2 years, Hezekiah by 3 years, Charlotte, by 2 years, and Susan, by 3 years. Odd.
  • 1870 U.S. Census record found for father, William, and sister, Susan. Martha not listed, and apparently mother, Elizabeth had died by this census, also not mentioned.
  • 1872 Per the 1900 U.S. Census, Martha Key married Thomas Hughes in 1872.
  • 1900 U.S. Census: Marthy E. Hughes, age 54, lived in ED 114 Holston District (North Part) of Washington, Virginia, with husband, Thomas, age 64, and children Louise, age 25, Charles, age 23, Oltie, age 18, and Frank J., age 13. Thomas and Marthy had been married 28 years, had 8 children, 5 still living. Thomas states place of birth was Mosoria (Missouri), Marthy and Louise born in Tennessee, Charles, Oltie, and Frank born in Virginia. Thomas' occupation was farmer, Charles worked as a salesman. Family could read and write; spoke English. Thomas owned his farm, free of a mortgage. [3]
  • Not found on 1910 or 1920 Census'; no death record found.
