Biography

Charles was born in 1843 in Frederick, Virginia. At age 17, Charles worked as a clerk in a store in Indiana. By 1870, he is living in Pottawatomie County, Kansas. On April 30th 1870, he received a marriage License to marry, then 19 year old Mary E. Edwards. They were married in May of that year. His brother, George W. Kidd was living with them at the time. He was either teaching school or going to school to become a teacher. Charles and Mary raised four children: Lida, Charity, known as Allie, Luther and Anna. He and his wife ran a hotel in the Village of Dunlap, Kansas in 1880. He passed away when his youngest was 8 years old, in 1898. He was only 46 years old.

In the 1850 United States Federal Census, Charles E. Kidd was 7 years, living in District 16, Frederick, Virginia. Household members: Andrew Kidd (aged 49); Nancy Kidd (aged 45); Richard KIdd (aged 16); Joseph Kidd (aged 14); George Kidd (aged 12); John Kidd (aged 10); Andrew Kidd (aged 9); Charles Kidd (aged 7); James Kidd (aged 3) and Ann Kidd (aged 1). and had three more siblings living at home; Richard (aged 16); Joseph Kidd (aged 14); and George Kidd (aged 12)

In the 1860 United States Federal Census, Charles E. Kidd worked as a clerk in store in Dick, Johnson, Clay, Indiana at the age of 17. The three oldest boys. no longer lived at home.

In the 1870 United States Federal Census, Charles E. Kidd is living in Louisville, Pottawatomie, Kansas. Household members listed: Charles E Kidd (aged 27); Mary E. Kidd (aged 18); and perhaps, his brother, George W. Kidd (aged 33). Charles is listed as a farmer and his brother, George, teaching school.

In the 1880 United States FederalCensus, Charles is living in the Village of Dunlap, Morris County, Kansas. Listed as occupation is "keeping Hotel"with his wife's parents, H.B.and Charity Edwards.
