Biography

This is the profile for Elizabeth (Baker) Doolittle, the daughter of Nicholas Baker and Mary (Hodgett) Baker and the husband of Edward Dooltittle of Kidderminster, Worcestershire.[1]

Date and Place of Baptism

Elizabeth was baptized on 18 April 1593 at St. Nicholas, King's Norton, Worcestershire.[2][3]

Residency in Kings Norton and Oldswinford

Based on the vital records of the children Nicholas Baker and Mary (Hodgett) Baker, Elizabeth and her family lived in King's Norton and then about 1602 moved to Oldswinford, Worcestershire.[4]

Marriage

Elizabeth married Edward Doolittle of Kidderminster, Worcestershire on 27 May 1609 at St. Mary, Oldswinford, Worcestershire.[5][3][1]

After their marriage, Elizabeth and Edward initially resided at Elizabeth's home town of Oldswinford, but by 1615 they had moved to Kidderminster.[6]

Children

Elizabeth and Edward had the following children:

  1. John, bpt. 11 March 1609/10 at Oldswinford, bur. 7 May 1610 at Oldswinford[7]
  2. (possibly) a son, bpt. 17 March 1610/1 at Stoke[8]
  3. Mary, say 1613, bur. 15 December 1615 at Oldswinford[9]
  4. John, bpt. 26 November 1615 at Kidderminster.[10]
  5. Tymothy, bpt. 3 September 1617 at Kidderminster[11]
  6. Abraham, bpt. 23 July 1619 at Kidderminster,[12] presumably died before August 1620
  7. Abraham, bpt. 20 August 1620 at Kidderminster[13]
  8. Daniel, bpt. 7 April 1622 at Kidderminster[14]
  9. Joshua, bpt. 11 February 1623/4 at Kidderminster,[15] presumably died before September 1625
  10. Josua, bpt. 11 September 1625 at Kidderminster[16]
  11. (possibly) Samuel, bpt. 9 September 1627 at St. Martin, Birmingham[17]

Death

Elizabeth was probably buried 23 October 1634 at Kidderminster,[18] 20 January 1635/6 at Oldswinford,[19] or 23 October 1636 at Kidderminster.[3]

Research Notes

Disputed Parentage

The Ann Brest van Kempen's 2004 Our Doolittle Line Revisited, states that:

There are many family trees on the internet with this Elizabeth as the daughter of Nicholas Baker and Mary Hodgett of Bewdley, Worcestershire. This Elizabeth is clearly not Nicholas' daughter, her father is Phillip. Nicholas, the son of John Baker and Margery Madistard, supposedly died in New Haven, Connecticut in 1632. There is no evidence of a Nicholas Baker anywhere in early Connecticut, not just in New Haven. It would be very nice to have had Elizabeth come from Bewdley the town next to Kidderminster, but I'm afraid this connection cannot be made. This entire scenario is full of errors and I believe totally without support.[20]

Van Kempen's claim that "This Elizabeth is clearly not Nicholas' daughter, her father is Phillip" is, based on current evidence, clearly incorrect. There is no evidence linking the 1587 baptism in Worcester of Elizabeth Baker, daughter of a Phillip Baker, cited by Van Kempen, to Edward Doolittle's wife Elizabeth Baker. On the other hand, the evidence is quite strong that Edward's wife was indeed the Elizabeth Baker who was the daughter of Nicholas Baker and Mary (Hodgetts) Baker. As set forth on their profiles, Nicholas Baker and Mary (Hodgetts) Baker lived in Kings Norton until about 1602 and had at least 6 children baptized there, including a daughter Elizabeth in 1593. The family then moved about 1602 to Oldswinford. The proposition that the family at Kings Norton was the same as the one at Oldswinford is confirmed by the 1604 will of Nichlas Baker of Stourbridge/Oldswinford, which mentions the children baptized in Kings Norton.[21] The proposition that Elizabeth Baker, the daughter of Nicholas Baker and Mary (Hodgetts) Baker, was the Elizabeth Baker who married Edward Doolittle of Kidderminster is supported by both the record of the marriage of people by that name in Kidderminster in 1609[5] and Nicholas' pedigree in the 1844 County Genealogies, Pedigrees of Hertfordshire Families, which states that his daughter Elizabeth married Edward Doolittle of Kidderminster.[1] The fact that Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas Baker and Mary (Hodgetts) Baker, would have been only 16 at the time she married Edward Doolittle in 1609 is a bit unusual, but less so given that her father Nicholas died in 1604, making her likely to have had an early marriage. Van Kempen was correct in suggesting that family trees that showed that Nicholas died in New Haven, Connecticut were erroneous; he died in Stourbridge/Oldswinford in 1604.

I plan to add a more thorough discussion of Abraham's disputed parentage in his profile. I think it belongs there, with just a cross-reference to the issue in Elizabeth's or Edward's profiles.

The assertion that sons John and Abraham were the immigrants John and Abraham Doolittle is supported by the fact that their aunt and uncle, Thomas Nash and Margery (Baker) Nash, are known to have emigrated to the New Haven Colony.

I am going to edit the other profile for Elizabeth Baker and see where it goes. From what I see so far, I think it is very likely that she is the mother of Abraham Doolittle.

This profile should ultimately either be merged into that one or turned into Unknown Unknown and the connections to Elizabeth parents and spouse disconnected.

Chase do you have sources for a) her birth/parents; and b) her marriage to Edward Doolittle?

I've completed the merge.

We are still seeking what the Two compiled genealogies cite before changing her identity. Does anyone have access to either of the two cited works here?

It would seem this is the same person as Baker-4557.

Her spouse is also her brother. Also, if Humphrey Doolittle was her father, her last name should be Doolittle.

Do you have any sources you can add that help explain her?
