Biography

Williard R Kidder Son of Ashbel Kidder & Mary Sprague]].

Bio: 1875 an ad publicizing the sale of a small Wabash River flour mill caught Willard Kidder's attention. After he inspected the facility and secured financial assistance, he acquired the property at the southwest corner of Wabash Ave. and Water St. He then moved to Vigo County from Quincy, Mich. For nearly half a century, Kidder was associated with successful Terre Haute enterprises.

Before locating in Terre Haute, the native of Stratton, Vt., was a farmer, grain dealer, mill operator and stave manufacturer.

Through expansion, the small 100-barrel-a-day grinding stone mill doubled its capacity. In 1879 Willard's younger brother Wright L. "W.L." Kidder, a veteran miller, also situated in Terre Haute. The Kidder brothers converted "Wabash Flouring Mill" into an innovative roller mill, the first in the Midwest.

The firm began shipping "Gold Medal" flour throughout the world.

In 1884 W.L. Kidder sold his interest to his older brother to join his sons Edson and Frank at the Avenue Flour Mill at 944 Poplar St. In 1887 — after the Avenue Mill was destroyed by fire — W.L. acquired and enlarged the former McKeen Bros. Mill at 10th and Wabash, naming it W.L. Kidder & Son Imperial Mill. For several years its productivity surpassed the Wabash Mill, exceeding 1000 barrels a day beginning in 1895. However, when W.L. Kidder died on Aug. 5, 1899, at age 64 and Edson died Jan. 12, 1902, at age 39, the Imperial Mill was sold. With assistance from son Marcus, Willard Kidder's Wabash Mill continued to expand. But after Marcus died on April 29, 1908, at age 42, the Kidders sold the business to Paul Kuhn. Later the mill was owned by Sparks Milling Co., producers of Vigola and Arrow brands of flour.

Active in civic affairs, Willard spearheaded the formation of the Terre Haute Board of Trade, predecessor to the Commercial Club and the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, and often invested in promising local ventures. A co-founder of Terre Haute Shovel & Tool Works, Kidder was a major stockholder in Terre Haute Street Railway Co. when it converted from mule power to electricity. He also owned a 2,500-acre farm in North Dakota, operated by his son Clinton.

In 1860 Willard married Louisa Kendall, also a Vermont native, and the couple raised five boys—Marcus, Clinton, Ned, Arthur and Sidney— and two girls Cora (Wood) and Idelle.

The family resided at 456 N. Center St. for nearly 40 years. The boys attended Rose Poly.

All but Marcus earned an engineering degree there. In 1949 Rose awarded Arthur Kidder, surveyor with the U.S. Land Office and president emeritus of the Indiana Land Surveyors Conference, with an honorary doctorate in engineering. Louisa Kidder died at home Oct. 23, 1922, at age 86. Willard died there July 21, 1925, at age 91. They lay in rest at Highland Lawn Cemetery.
