James Thomas Kidwell was born about 1675 on the Ware Plantation in Morgantown, Charles County, Maryland. He married Anna Mary Thomas and had 7 children.
James and his wife Anna purchased Ware Plantation after her fathers death. The land is now owned by a power company and is located on the east side of the Potomac across from Mount Vernon.

Will of James Kidwell, Written 28 September 1740 in Charles County, Maryland; proved 11 October 1742
In the Name of God Amen. The Last Will and Testament of James Kidwell of Charles County is as follows. First, I commend my sould to Almighty God that gave it and as for my body I desire it my be decently buried by my Executrix hereafter mentioned and as for what worldly goods God Almighty has been pleased to bless me with I dispose of as follows. Firstly, I give and bequeath to my beloved son, John Kidwell thirty acres of land beith more or less lying on the East side of my [illegible] now within my fence and on the East side of my now Dwelling house to him and his heirs forever. Secondly I give and bequeath to my son William Kidwell my bay mare name or called [illegible] and her increase. Thirdly I give and bequeath to my Daughter Tracy Kidwell a cow and a calf to be delivered to her after the Death of my beloved wife Anna Kidwell. Fourthly I give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth a cow after the Death of my said wife. Fiftly I give and bequeath to my son Thomas Kidwell a horse colt now three years old and one heifer after the Death of my said wife. but it is my will and desire that he the said Thomas shall immediately have the above said colt in possession. Sixthly I give and bequeath to my son Benjamin Kidwell one cow and calf to be delivered to him after the Death of my said wife. Seventhly and lastly I give leave to Constitute and appoint my beloved wife Anna Kidwell Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament Disannulling all former wills by me made. In Testamony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal This twenty-eighth day of September 1740. Signed sealed and Delivered in the presence of us: Samuel Taylor, Thomas Lawson, Joseph Fry.

On the back of the foregoing will was endorsed the following in Charles County. On the 11th day of October 1742 came Samuel Taylor and Thomas Lawson two of the subscribing witnesses to the within will and made oath on the holy Evangelists that they saw James Kidwell sign the same and heard him publish and declare the same to be his Last Will and Testament and that at the time of his so doing, he was to the best of the apprehensions of sound and desponned (?) mind and memory and that they together with Joseph Fry subscribed their names thereunto in the presence of the Testator at his request.
James died in 1741 and was buried on the plantation.
