Biography

Matilda Kidwell was born September 10, 1805, in Madison county, Kentucky, a daughter of William Kidwell and Ruth (Lockhart) Kidwell. Matilda's father served in the military, during the War of 1812, and died January 11, 1814, as a result of disease contracted while he was in the service of the United States and in the line of duty. It was not until 1853 that the government passed a law allowing the widows of the Veterans to apply for a Widow's pension. March 22, 1853, William's wife, Ruth (Lockhart) Kidwell affirmed that they were married on November 17, 1804 and that at the time of his death, their living children were Rebecca Kidwell, then age 38, Matilda Kidwell, then aged 44, Lewis G. Kidwell, then aged 40, and Parthecia, then aged 36 yeears. [1]

Matilda's first husband was William Livingston, born 1803, in Kentucky. Children of Matilda and William are:

  • Ruth M. Livingston, named for Matilda's mother, born 1831, in Indiana
  • Henry M. Livingston, born 1833, married 1) Elizabeth Proctor, on May 4, 1856, in St Francois, Missouri and 2) Lydia C. Turner, on August 11, 1869, in Webster, Missouri
  • Robert G. Livingston, born November 16, 1835, in Indiana, died November 20, 1918, in St Louis, Missouri, married Margaret Snyder [2]
  • William R. Livingston, born 1837, in Indiana, died 1896, in Arkansas

Matilda and William are found on the United States Census of 1850, living in St Francois county, Missouri, with three of their four children still living in the household. [3] William Livingston presumably passed away between 1850 and 1854. On June 15, 1854, in St Clair county, Missouri, Matilda married Jacob Shultz
