Newt was born on a farm 6 miles northeast of Stanberry. Being one of 4 sons, he worked on the farm until the age of 23. They moved to Stanberry in 1882, where he cleared ground in the northwest part of town, known now as Lilly's addition and built a one room frame house. Newt dug the first grave in High Ridge cemetery for the daughter of Levi Sweat, the man who had set aside the land for the cemetery. Levi asked Newt to take the job of sexton the same year. Newt was sexton for the next 50 years. He was also part time school custodian and worked at the old brickyard at the west edge of town. Newt passed away at the age of 90. He will always be remembered as the "old democrat'.
