Biography

John was born about 1740, the son of John Killam and Sarah Patch of Wenham, Essex, Massachusetts[1]

On April 23, 1765, he married Joanna Parrot[2]. The marriage notice was posted December 8, 1764[3]

In 1766, John moved from Wenham to Yarmouth Nova Scotia, and settled on a land grant at the head of the Chegoggin River[4]. Like many other families of this region who emigrated to Yarmouth, Joanna and her two oldest children followed, once the homestead was established.

Their children included:

  1. John II, born December 16, 1765[5], who married Sarah Allen, February 16, 1794
  2. Abraham, born April 19, 1767[6], who married Susanna Rose, daughter of Richard Rose
  3. Asa, born May 23, 1769, who married Anna Walker, daughter of John Walker on April 15, 1790, and who drowned in 1795. His widow Anna remarried Christopher Rost. their daughter Mary married Wellington Killam, son of Mark; and Margery married John Sullivan, son of Joseph. Anna Walker died August 13, 1853.
  4. Isaac, born April 5, 1772, who married Elizabeth Woodbury, daughter of John Woodbury of Ipswich on December 8, 1800[7], and who died circa 1840 without children[8]
  5. Jacob, born May 4, 1774[9], who married Susanna Hersey, daughter of Levi Hersey on May 26, 1808[10], and who died Sept 3, 1843
  6. Sarah, born November 18, 1776, who married Captain Samuel Corning, son of Ebenezer Corning, and who died January 18, 1835
  7. Eliakim, born May 17, 1778, who married Margaret Mattingly, daughter of James; and then married Elizabeth Sims (widow); and then married Susanna (Brown) Goodwin, widow of John Goodwin on October 23, 1844; and who died November 2, 1869[11]
  8. Mark, born November 29, 1779, who married Abigail Mattingly, daughter of Jemes in 1802, and who died January 4, 1854
  9. Joanna, born September 17, 1781, who married Joseph Sullivan, son of Patrick, who died June 4, 1868
  10. Abigail, born November 20, 1783, who died March 8, 1784
  11. Kezia, born June 25, 1786, who died at age 18, unmarried.
