Biography

Origin

Benjamin was born about 1776. His marriage record states that he was from the city of Alcobassa in Portugal. We don't know exactly when Benjamin came to Gaspé but there is a bit of family lore that explains how he came.

Benjamin Joseph Killer and a friend, one day, cut the dresses that were hanging on Benjamin's aunt's clothesline. To escape the wrath of the family, they both stowed away on the ships that were at anchor in the nearby port. One ship sailed to Canada and the other to Greenland. When Benjamin arrived in Canada, he feared that someone might have been sent after him. Being Christian, his middle name was Joseph. He dropped his family name and became Benjamin Joseph.[1]

Surname

Benjamin is recorded by several surnames in the parish registers. Surnames include Killer, Joseph, Bond and Benjamin. He is also referred to as Portugais. [2]

Occupation

Benjamin worked for Charles Robin. David Lee states in his book The Robin's in Gaspe 1766-1825,

In 1802, for example, Benjamin Joseph Killer, who had come out to the Chaleur Bay from Portugal on a fishing ship, married a girl from New Carlisle; he is the ancestor of the Joseph family, numerous on the Gaspé Coast today. Men like Killer were experienced seaman and, though hard to find, were invaluable to Charles Robin.[3]

Marriage

The marriage of Benjamin Joseph Killer, major son of Joseph Killer and Marie Jesu of the city of Alcobassa, Portugal, and Théotiste Huart, major daughter of Jacques Huart and Anne Duguet, was "rehabilitated" on 24 April 1803. A contract had been signed before John Man, on 30 March 1802. [4][5]

Death

Benjamin Joseph died on 12 October 1848 and was buried the following day at Paspébiac. [6]

Moi!

Pouffff,

" In 1802, for example, Benjamin Joseph Killer, who had come out to the Chaleur Bay from Portugal on a fishing ship, married a girl from New Carlisle; he is the ancestor of the Joseph family, numerous on the Gaspé Coast today. Men like Killer were experienced seaman and, though hard to find, were invaluable to Charles Robin"

?. N'est-ce pas !

Du Huart, du Joseph, et du Loisel! Allez voir là! https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Huard-500

Thank you cousin for your comments. Of course, it is a story that was inflated, exaggerated over the generations, most family stories are. I would dearly love to know more about him.

Ôĥ!

Nice visit! I pray you to excuse my poor english!

Ôĥ! Dear cousin Dawn! You make me a big pleasure by your answer! I see you often on my Huard ancestors, and others, I think! With perhaps on Duguay, I don't rember, I made a new cut of my hairs, and my memory became as short too! I think! Ha ha!

I'm sorry to have not realy much more informations on about Bejamen Joseph Keller!

I just, as you, read short histories about him! And I found this one's last about his aunt's dresses sur la corde à linge very FUNNY!

The first that I found about him is that he was a friend of Jacques Loisel and Isabelle Doiron his wife. I found this information on the Lucie Delarosbil And!.... Benjamen maried the daughter of another of my metis ancestor Jacques Huard. My great-grandmother Loisel was Adeline Huart! Philpp's wife!

As it's doing a very long time that I'm trying to find from WHERE came Jacques and Robert Loisel, I pick all informations about them, to, at the end, be a few able to conclude where they come from!

So, I ever read in the years about 1995, that Robert Julien was in Acadie, and tha Julienne came from Basque-Espagnol. And nothing more precise!

I tried to find Robert Julien in Acadia, no results ! In St-Helen Bretagne, and all around, but no more results. I almost found that they dead very young! That had had no time to marry, I put death certificates on their respective page, for those supposed to be!

And due to language, it's no more possible to me to find Ronert Julien in Spain, or around!

So, when I read that Jacques Loisel served him as witness to Benjamen's mariage, and that Isabelle was a friend to him too, I immedately lightned that to know Benjamen had no wife in Portugal, that Jacques must had been knowing him there! What's it could be very possible! And shoul be a track, a trail to me for Jacque's origins! Here's down where I found infoes! On the Lucie's DelaRobil blog! http://luludel.over-blog.com/2015/06/theotiste-huart-mere-des-joseph.html

So I stop here, I'm realy sorry to have no more good hitory about him, you hard it!

And If you wish that I arase my comments from your page, it shall make pleasure to do!

So if I find some thing more about Benjamen, it shall make me a big pleasure to send it to you!

Have a good end of day!
