Biography

George Killian lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

George was born in 1740 in Pennsylvania, either Lancaster or Bucks County, and died in 1830 in Louisiana. He was married around 1767, possibly in what is now Catawba County, North Carolina.[1]

George received land grant of 300 acres of land on both side of Hunting Creek Burke Co.[2]

George is mentioned in his father's will.[3]

Ed Killian's research, as provided at Early Southwest Mississippi Territory, Early Pioneers and Settlers shows the following children of George and Mary Anne Killian:

  • Joseph[4]
  • John
  • Sara Ann
  • Nancy Ann
  • David
  • George Jr.
  • Mary Ann
  • Prescilla Ann

Ed's original research also provided the following information:

George Killian held two British Crown Land Grants near Morganton, Burke Co., NC and served as a Captain of a Mounted Rifle Company in Joseph McDowell's Burke County Militia, seeing action at Cowpens, King's Mountain, Ramsour's Mill and Yorktown in the Revolutionary War.
The family was Protestant.[6]
George moved his family to Natchez in 1782-1783 by coming down the Mississippi River. In 1804, George and most of his family moved to St. Helena Ph., LA and achieved 4000 acres of Spanish Land Grants near Montpelier, St. Helena Ph., LA.

The Village of Killian, Livingston Parish, Louisiana is named after him. He was the owner of Killian's Ferry where most residents of the area had to bring their produce in order to ship it across the lake to New Orleans.[7]

George Killian's grave at Killian Methodist Chapel Cemetery, Hillsdale, St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, has two tombstones:[7][8]
