Biography

James came to Canada with his parents and siblings, probably in 1845. The family settled in Downie Township, outside St. Marys in Canada West (now Ontario) in 1847 or 48. It is known that his father Mark Killoran was killed by a falling tree in 1848 while they were clearing land for crops. [1]

James's date of birth is given as 15 Nov 1828 in the 1901 Census of Canada taken in Downie township, Perth County, Ontario. [2]

In 1852, James's age was given as 20 in the Census of Canada West of Downie township, Perth County, Canada West. At the time, he was farming with his brother Michael, and his widowed mother Catherine was the head of the household. [3] James's brother Thomas signed the document for the land granted to Mark Killoran in 1846, which suggests that Thomas may have been the eldest son.

Residence: SE Downie Twp; south side of Oxford Rd east of Conc. IX
Date: 1879 [4]
Place: Downie Twp, Perth County, Ontario. [5]

in 1861 Census of Canada West, James, age 33, was listed as Killorn, together with his wife and eldest three children: Mark, Michael and Mary. [6] On the same page is listed James's younger brother John Killoran. On the next page is James's mother, Catherine (Killorn), as well as his brothers Thomas and Michael with their wives, also listed as Mrs. Killorn. In the middle, is Mr. and Mrs. Davy, who were James's sister Bridget and her husband Jeremiah (Darby) Davy and their children. [7]

In 1881, and in other censuses, James's age is consistent with a year of birth in 1826 or 1827, but it can't conflict with Michael who was supposedly 2 years older in 1852. [8]

James died on 22 February 1906, still a farmer in Downie township of Perth County, Ontario, Canada. His age was given as 87, but it doesn't look like a family member who informed the county. It is more likely, based on the early census ages, that James was 77 when he died. [9]

He is apparently buried in St Marys Cemetery, St. Marys, Ontario, Canada, although there is no headstone image online.
