Biography
James appeared with his parents Michael (Michel) and Elizabeth (spelled Kiloran) in the 1861 Census of New Brunswick. His age in 1861 was given as 18, as was the age of his sister Ann. (Note that there was a Belledune River in Gloucester County, New Brunswick at that time, and that Restigouche was the neighbouring county.) [1] [2]
James had left the family home in New Brunswick by the time of the 1871 Census of Canada. Both he and his sister Ann are missing from the family in that census. [3]
A James Killoran married a Mary Butler, daughter of Michael and Margaretta Butler on 24 Sept. 1879 at Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. [4] James's wife Mary, whose parents were Michael and Margaret, is in the 1880 U.S. Census in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, which argues against James's spouse being the daughter of William and Mary Ann Butler of Kansas. Mary Butler's birth place was given as "Ireland", confirmed in later records for her children. [5]
