Biography

Cyrus was born in 1827. He passed away in 1907. Cyrus Kimball is listed on the 1850 census (page 26) of Mercer, Somerset County, Maine ( USA ) as living at the Tucker family home two doors down Elm street from his parents home. It is said he left home in the early 1850's in pursuit of gold in the California Gold Rush and after having no luck there he headed for the Victorian gold fields in Australia. It has been discovered that he departed New York ( so he may not have gone to California ) on the ship 'Rockland' under Captain Vinall, 20th April 1853, bound for Reo de Janeiro then on to Melbourne Australia. He met Grace Owens and married her at ' The Manse ' in Beechworth Victoria. Beechworth was one of the more prosperous gold fields in Victoria. It is believed Cyrus worked as a carpenter on many of the bridges that cross the Murry River before he headed north to the gold fields in NSW. He settled for some time at Ironbarks ( now Stuart Town ) west of Bathurst and started a business as a contract Carrier and Supplier. After about nine years the family moved on to Grenfell where Harriet was born and then on to the small gold fields near Parks known as ' The Welcome Lead ' where he settled for several years and became storekeeper. He is listed in the Post Office Directory NSW ( 1892-3 ) at Bulgandramine as a Contractor ( ?). Bulgandramine is listed in the Post Office Directory : "Bulgandramine; Narromine Co. 319 Mils W by rail & coach( 41 miles ) Via Dubbo from Sydney. Post Office, Agri district, not a township. " There was also a Aboriginal settlement in the area and is still the name of a large grazing property. Cyrus shares a headstone with his wife Grace in the C.of E. section of the Parkes cemetery.
