James Kimball was born in 1782 in Littleton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. He was the son of Daniel Kimball and Lucy (Dutton) Kimball. He married Rachel (Hartwell) Kimball in 1807 in Littleton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Together, they had ten children. His first wife died in 1845. Next, he married Mary (Blood) Harris Kimball.
James Kimball was one of the pioneers of the anti-slavery and temperance movements. He was Town Clerk from 1838 to 1851. He was a member of the Lyceum. He served on the Board of Selectmen. First, he was a Deacon in the Unitarian Church. Later, he helped to found the Orthodox Congregational Church and then served as a Deacon there from 1840 until his death. He represented the town in the State Legislature. He passed away in 1869.
