Anna Margaretha was born around 1796 in Grimm, Saratov, Russia, to parents Johann Andreas Kimmel and his deceased wife, name unknown. In 1798, she lived with her grandparents Kaspar Kimmel and his wife Anna Maria Eichhorn who no doubt helped their widower son take care of his young children. Anna Margaretha's brother Johann Konrad had been born about a year earlier. Their mother's death may have been related to complications from her pregnancy or childbirth of her infant child.
