FIRST GENERATION

1. Hugh KINSELOE was born about 1636 in England. He died about 1690 in Northcumberland County, Virginia. The surname Kincheloe is Irish. According to ancient Irish manuscripts, the name is first seen in 365 AD with the appearance of Enna Cheinnselaig, a warrior king who defeated Eochaidh Muighmheadhon, King of Tara. Uí Cheinnselaig refers to the dynastic family that claimed Enna as their ancestor. The names of Uí Cheinnselaig kings are scattered through the kings-list of the Book of Leinster.

He was married to Marion HALEY on 14 Oct 1690. Marion HALEY was born about 1640 in England. Hugh KINSELOE and Marion HALEY had the following children:

+2 i. Cornelius KINCHELOE.

SECOND GENERATION

2. Cornelius KINCHELOE1,2 was born about 1668 in Richmond County, Virginia or Hy Kinsella Ireland. He died on 6 Dec 1693 in Richmond County, Virginia. The earliest ancestor of the Kincheloe Family in America is "Cornelius Kincheloe". He sailed for Virginia shortly after Oliver Cromwell defeated King Charles I. Oral history passed down indicates that Cornelius came from Scotland, but the original location of his line is Hy Kinsella, Ireland. He died sometime before 1718 in Richmond County, Virginia, was married to a Williams, and had one son John Sr.

Kincheloes were one of the rugged frontier families that settled the U.S. wilderness of Virginia, North Carolina, early Kentucky and Tennessee, and later the frontiers of Texas, and on to the California "Gold Rush."

Statistical information shows that about 867 Kincheloe households reside in the US, and at least 4 families are located in Canada. Most are in Virginia (DC area), Texas, and California. A search of Switchboard shows 803 "Kincheloe" listings...Try it out!

Cornelius and his family settled on Kincheloe Spring Branch, at the headwaters of a creek called Oatspekety, then Horse Bridge Swamp, then Bryers, and now Jugs Creek, just west of Totuskey Creek, North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, "Old" Rappahannock County, Virginia. Cornelius took deed to 100 acres of the Richmond County land in 1695.

He was married to WILLIAMS in 1693. WILLIAMS was born about 1667 in Richmond County, Virginia. Cornelius KINCHELOE and WILLIAMS had the following children:

3 i. Peter KINCHELOE1 was born about 1692 in Richmond County, Virginia. +4 ii. John KINCHELOE. 5 iii. Cornelius KINCHELOE1.

THIRD GENERATION

4. John KINCHELOE2,1 was born in 1700 in N. Famham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia. He died on 25 Mar 1746 in Prince William, Virginia. Cornelius' son John inherited the Richmond County land. John sold 10 acres to William Smyth (Smith) on April 21, 1722, and he sold the remaining 90 acres to Robert Smith on June 2, 1724, for 6,000 pounds of "good and weighty tobacco" packed in casks. John then acquired hundreds of acres of land in Stafford County. This land became part of Prince William County, just west of what is now Washington, D.C. The land was on both sides of Bull Run, along Occuquan Creek and Nebasco Creek in Hamilton Parish. In 1737, he bought land on Powell's Run and more land on Bull Run and in Hamilton Parish.

John was born around 1700 in North Farnham Parish and served as warden of Truro Perish, Prince William County, 1732-1736 and Vestryman (A committee of members elected to administer the temporal affairs of a parish) in his church from 1736-1746. John signed his will on March 16, 1746 and died later that month in Prince William County. He was married to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and they had eleven children.

According to the book Kincheloe McPherson and Related Families McPherson, 1951, John was married to Elizabeth Canterbury. However, John W. Kincheloe, III, in his book "This Is Where He Walked...." Kincheloe, 1995, clearly shows that there are no Richmond County documents to support the Canterbury-Kincheloe connection.

He was married to Elizabeth CANTERBURY in 1717 or 1718 in Richmond County, Virginia. Elizabeth CANTERBURY was born in 1697/98. She died between 1776 and 1778. John KINCHELOE and Elizabeth CANTERBURY had the following children:

+6 i. John KINCHELOE. +7 ii. William KINCHELOE. 8 iii. Daniel KINCHELOE was born in 1723. He died in 1785. Daniel was born January 8, 1723/24, in North Farnham Parish. He had 138 acres adjoining his brother Cornelius on Rushey Branch. Daniel presented "Report of the Lands" on June 10, 1768.

Daniel's first wife, Elizabeth Wickliffe, had a half-brother named Benjamin Wickliffe. Benjamin was the first husband of Sukey (Susan) Davis. When Benjamin died, his widow married Daniel.

Daniel died in 1785 in Fairfax County, he had eight children.

9 iv. Cornelius KINCHELOE was born on 8 Aug 1721. 10 v. Elizabeth KINCHELOE was born in 1726. She died in 1771. Elizabeth was born in 1726, in Stafford County, she was married to Isaac Davis in 1749, and later to Rhodham Blansett. She had eleven children, and died in 1771.

11 vi. Mrs. John Haskins (Kincheloe) KINCHELOE. 12 vii. Margaret (Mary?) KINCHELOE. We know that Mary was born in 1719 in North Farnham Parish. She married Richard Simpson, Jr. in 1740 in Fairfax County, Virginia, and she too had eleven children. Mary and Richard Simpson died in Caswell county, North Carolina, Richard in 1789, and Mary in 1798.

13 viii. Wildman/Wileman (Peter?) KINCHELOE was born in 1730. He died in 1810. 14 ix. Nancy KINCHELOE was born in 1734. She died in 1822. Nancy was born in 1734 and was married to Thomas Stribling, Jr. They died in South Carolina, Thomas on March 7, 1819, and Nancy on December 2, 1822.

He bought 183 acres in Fauquier County from his brother William and wife Molly on October 22, 1768. He also bought 157 acres in Fauquier County from John Rector for 62 pounds, 16 shillings on September 23, 1771, 100 acres from Thomas Glasscock for 60 pounds on August 22, 1774, and 103 acres from John Monday. He was elected vestryman of Detlingen Perish in the spring of 1785. He died February 15, 1809 in Tennessee.

He was married to Mary "Polly" WICKLIFFE in 1744 in Prince William, Virginia.

7. William KINCHELOE3,2,1 was born on 26 May 1736 in Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, Virginia. He died on 10 Oct 1788 in Bardstown, Nelson County, Virginia. At the old Virginia family graveyard buried are several Confederate soldiers, including William Simpson Kincheloe, who fought for Mosby's Raiders, and his brother James Cornelius Kincheloe. There has been at least five generations born and buried on Kincheloe property along Bull Run. There is even an older graveyard, but Union troop encampments destroyed the grave markers during the Civil War. The Union also burned the old farmhouse on the land.

The farm is situated on Bull Run and one can still find Civil War relics from the Battle of Bull Run, fought in part on the Kincheloe property. Land from the farm has been purchased by the state of Virginia for the Bull Run State Park and the Manassas National Battlefield.

William was born on May 26, 1736, in Hamilton Parish. He married Mary "Mollie" White in 1760 and they had ten children. Their land included 400 acres in Fauquier County, purchased for 90 pounds, June 3, 1767 from Smith Burgess.

William and John (his brother) were appointed to survey a road in 1769, and witnessed the will of John Hurmons in 1775.

William was a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, serving in Captain James Scott's Fauquier Independent Company. He served the Colonies in the Continental Line. He "wintered at Valley Forge" under General George Washington's command, where he captured a British sword. Later his son Jesse in the War of 1812 used the sword.

Promoted to Captain, William resided at the Falls of the Ohio (Louisville, KY) in 1778/79. He then moved to Nelson County on Simpson Creek about 1790. At the time many of the frontier settlers lived in forts to protect themselves from the Indians. William found a partially built fort (by Captain William Polk) and he completed it. It was called Fort Kincheloe, or Kincheloe's Station. In 1782, a band of Indians led by the renegade Simon Girty (an Englishman who remained loyal to the crown) attacked Fort Kincheloe, killing many, and taking others prisoner. Fortunately, the Kincheloes had moved to Chaplin Fork late fall of 1781. Thereafter, Kincheloe's Station was called Burnt Station.

Having survived war with the British and war with the Indians, William Kincheloe was killed on his own plantation when a tree fell on him in 1797. Both of his older sons fought in the Revolution and all six of his sons served in the War of 1812.

He was married to Mary (Molly?) WHITE in 1760 in Prince William, Virginia. Mary (Molly?) WHITE was born on 9 Feb 1744 of Prince William, Virginia. She died on 21 Nov 1831 in Nelson County, Kentucky. William KINCHELOE and Mary (Molly?) WHITE had the following children:

There is some evidence that he fought with Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans.

Lewisburg, named in honor of Lewis, or "Kincheloe Bluff," on the Green River in Muhlenburg County, Kentucky was a landing place before 1798, and was declared a 'port of entry' in 1800. Merchandise from the east was received there, and produce, hides and pork for the south were shipped from there.

Kincheloe Origins

Research on Hugh Kinselo
by John William Kincheloe, III
Appendix I:
Family historians for years have been aware of an intriguing Virginia record of the marriage of a "Hugh Kinselo." The document was reported to be evidence of his October 14, 1660 marriage to Marion Haley in what was thought to be Northumberland County. This county was the "mother county" to several Tidewater Virginia counties which were subdivided from it. Cornelius' own Richmond county was one of those derivative counties. Knowing this, it was reasonable to conclude that, though appearing 33 years apart, Hugh and Cornelius lived in approximately the same geographical are in Virginia.

The evidence of a "Hugh Kinselo" has held great appeal among family historians. The spelling of the surname had a remarkable similarity to the earliest appearance of Cornelius' name, "Kinselloe. Furthermore, the presence of the name "Kinselo" in Virginia records from 1660 clearly supported the notion that the "se" middle syllable was typical of early forms of the family name.

Beyond this, the existence of Hugh raised an important question: was he related to Cornelius? With the two appearing as adults in roughly the same place and a generation apart, were we to understand Hugh best as the father of Cornelius? Did Hugh take the American family name back yet another generation? Many are inclined to doubt that Hugh was the father of Cornelius because the name "Hugh" did not continue as a given name for subsequent generations, unlike those omnipresent names "Cornelius" and "John". The truth was, however, we simply had no way of knowing.

The record of Hugh carried an additional, and possibly important bit of information: it said he married "Marion Haley." A bit of research tells us that the surname "Haley" (also spelled "Halley" and "Haly") was a family name from South Central and Western Ireland. A census published in 1659, the year before Hugh's marriage, showed that the family was prominent in Counties Clare and Limerick. Baptista Boazio's 1599 map of Ireland placed the Haly family in King's County (present-day Offaly), twenty miles west of the Barrow River headwaters. So, had Hugh Kinselo taken an Irish wife? Was Hugh Irish as well?

Speculation has continued to expand regarding Hugh. Is there perhaps one more document that tells us about him? An entry in the Northumberland County Order Book, dated February 18, 1673/74 speaks volumes about the gritty circumstances of one Irishman named Hugh. The entry reads exactly as follows:

Whereas it appears to the Cort:yt Daniel & Hugh, two Irishmen, did unlawfully beat & abuse their overseer; It is ordered yt: ye saide servants make their saide Master satisfaccon for their saide default according to Act

Could it be that this Hugh, an indentured Irishman, and Hugh Kinselo were one in the same? In the absence of more definite information we are left in the dark about this man. Ultimately we could only assert what the early genealogists told us ~~ that he married Marion Haley in the fall of 1660, probably in Northumberland County, Virginia.

New research on "Hugh Kinselo" has yielded some surprising results, however. What this author has recently discovered questions almost everything family historians have been claiming about this individual. Based on a review of the documentation as cited by earlier genealogists, it is the author's opinion not only that "Hugh Kinselo" is unrelated to the Kincheloe family, but that it is unlikely that a "Hugh Kinselo" ever existed in 17th century Virginia.

The evidence documenting "Hugh Kinselo" has always been scant. Both L.D. McPherson and Clement Ross Jones cited only the same, single source to prove the existence of this possible Kincheloe ancestor. It is reasonable to think that Jones, being the earlier researcher, was the source of the notion of a Hugh Kinselo link. His genealogical compilation was dated 1934.

What was his evidence for Hugh? Was it a document from 1660? Was it a 17th century original record? The answer is no. A bit of investigation reveals that his sole source was, in fact, a brief item from a genealogical journal published in the 1920s. We are surprised to learn that the only citation ever offered in support of the existence of Hugh Kinselo was published in the June 1923 issue of The County Court Note-Book. Apart from the fact that this journal has a reputation for dubious reliability, the content of the "Hugh Kinselo" item proves to be the real shocker. After so much speculation on Hugh, his wife Marion, and his relation to Cornelius, the family researcher is stunned upon reading the actual source record. The full text of this brief item is printed below, precisely as originally published:

MARIAM HAEY (?) m. Hugh Kunneloe (?)
N-n, Va. ix-92. 14Oct1660
What a jolt it is to realize that this is the sole record that generated the account of Hugh Kinselo. The names early genealogists have led us to consider ~~ "Haley" and "Kinselo" ~~ now appear to have been creative extrapolations from the actual names in the source record.

It is revealing that Jones chose to cite only The County Court Note-Book, when within that item lies a better citation for a 17th century record. In fact, several things about the Jones citation make us think he did not ever see this County Court Note-Book item at all. First, his citation reads "I I#12" when, in fact, the item appears in "Vol. II, no.3, p.5." Second, Jones says that the item probably refers to a Northumberland County record. It is clear, however, from reading the journal that "N-n, Va." is an abbreviation for Northampton county on Virginia's Eastern Shore, and not Northumberland County. Third, Jones confesses that he was not able to locate certain early records. Perhaps some other researcher gave this item to Jones, and as it happened, the author never got a chance to evaluate the record or its original source. The citation numbering problem alone could very well have prevented him from even finding the record. The present writer found the item only by chance while flipping through pages out of frustration.

Unfortunately, the citation for the 17th century record is a problem, as well. The "ix, 92" appears to be a County Court Order Book and page number, but the original Hugh Kunneloe item proves elusive. All of this author's efforts to locate the original have been fruitless.

The actual text of the sole locatable source record, then, leaves us only with skepticism about the existence of any "Hugh Kinselo." The name "Kunneloe" does not appear to be a variant spelling of the family name; when spoken, it sounds like a different name altogether. Though the final verdict on Hugh is still in question until the discovery of the original 17th century document, the opinion of the present writer is that "Hugh Kinselo" is no more than a genealogical wild goose chase ~~ the product of a careless or overly-imaginative genealogist. The only documentation for Hugh is marginal at best, unlocatable in its original form, and almost certainly irrelevant for Kincheloe family genealogy. So under close scrutiny, the appealing mystery of "Hugh Kinselo" begins to dissolve away into a recognition of the fallibility all family historians are subject to, the present writer included. We come away from our encounter with "Hugh Kinselo" with a good measure of humility, and with a sense of gratitude for the generous amount of substantial genealogical work we have inherited.

In the wake of these findings about so-called "Hugh Kinselo," it bears reiteration that the earliest documented Kincheloe family ancestor in America was old Cornelius; his location, legacy, and pivotal place in family history are well-proved. The American family tree begins with him.[1]

If you have documentation of an actual relationship of Hugh Kinseloe to Cornelius Kincheloe (first noted in legal documents as Chencello) please provide that as we have been searching for reliable documentation for several years. The MacPherson book has proven to be unreliable in several areas, and include NO documentation of the relationship.
