Cardenio F. King
Ill In Hospital
Cardenio F. King, who was sentenced
to serve from 10 to 1 4years in the
penitentiary, is ill in the hospital ward
of the Massachusetts state prison in
Charlestown, says a Boston dispatch
to the New York Press. His friends
say his condition is serious, and that
he never will leave the ward alive.
Theprison authorities say, however,
that, although he is ill, there is no
immediate danger.
King was a resident in Charlotte in
the early 80's. He was correspondent
for the Atlanta Journal. He had the
nose for news and was a hustling correspondent.
Later he went to Boston
and became a banker, broker and general
promoter of scheme. For awhile
he sailed the high seas of financial
success, making money and spending
it with reckless prodigality. His downfall
was not a surprise. He was tried
on 27 counts and sentenced January
13. 1909, to serve from 10 to 14 years,
the trial being one of the most spectaucular
in the history of the state.
