Biography

John Melvin King was born on 25 Aug 1873 in Columbia, Maury, Tennessee, USA, son of Jordan Taylor King (1848 - 1891) and Mary Rebecca (Kelly) King (1848 - 1910).
His siblings were:
  1. Annie Mary (King) Morris (~1871 - ~1959)
  2. James Simpson King (1872 - 1955)
  3. Joel William King (1875 - 1928)
  4. Martha Melvina (King) Hines (1878 - 1950)
  5. George Washington King (1878 - 1921)
  6. Jesse Taylor King (1883 - 1969)
  7. Joshua King (~1885 - 1911)
  8. Archie Bentley King (1891 - 1976)
John married Elia Bell Burrows (1889 - 1970) on 5 Apr 1907 in Tarrant, Texas, United States. Their children were:
  1. John Cherry King (1911 - 1985)
  2. Huddleston King (1911 - 1911)
  3. Lectie Belle (King) Burch (1915 - 1978)
  4. James Edgar King (1918 - 1962)
  5. Velma Bernice (King) Teague (1924 - 2013)
  6. Doris Roberta (King) Leger (1929 - living).
He and Elia moved to, what Elia called the "Bald Prairie", when Elia contracted tuberculosis. She needed an arid climate. His occupation was a dry-land farmer. They lived in a small 3 room house. When one entered the front door, there was a small dressing table to the right and to the left was a treadle sewing machine to the left. About half way into the room there sits a small dining table on the left and across the room from it is a bed. Close to the dining table was a door to the middle room of the house. To the left was a sink (no running water) and a stove. To the right was a bed. Through the next door was John's and Elia's room, complete with a small chest of drawers and bed. The kitchen was used for cooking, bathing and sleeping. The main room was the dining room, sewing / dressing room and bedroom. The restroom was outside at the end of a path, complete with an old sears catalog. As I look back on that small humble home, it could have been the beginning of the tiny house industry. John and Elia raised 6 loving children in this tiny humble home.
John died on 21 Jul 1961 in Lubbock, Lubbock, Texas aged 87.[1][2][3][4] [5][6]
