William King Jr. was born on 29 January 1762, in Brattleboro, Windham, Vermont, the son of William King and Elizabeth Cushing. [1][2] An anecdote on his service in the Revolutionary War (Crockett 416): [3]
"Mr. King of Brattleboro and his two sons, William and Cushing King, while hoeing corn, heard the news of the battle of Bunker Hill two days after it occurred. They stopped work, leaned their hoes against a stump, went to Boston and enlisted in the American army. These men served through the war and returned seven years later to find their hoes where they had left them in the summer of 1775."
