Biography

Sarah King was the daughter of Consider King and Sarah Palmer.

Her date of birth 22 Apr 1772 was published by George F. J. King in the Sep 1909 issue of The Genealogical Exchange (vol. 6, no. 5, p 35; see photo attachment), [1] along with the dates of birth of her ten siblings, with no corroborating sources for any of the dates of birth or death. (However, the dates of birth of Ebenezer, Beriah and Abigail can be corroborated as cited, the ages of Sarah and William in the 1850 US Census are both consistent with their published dates of birth, and Ebenezer stated in his Revolutionary War pension file that the source of his date of birth was the family Bible):

1) Ebenezer King b. 15 Jun 1761; [2] [3] d. 03 May 1841. [4]

2) Beriah King b. 06 Feb 1763; [5] d. 17 Jan 1843. [6]

3) Reuben King b. 22 Mar 1765; d. Sep 1849.

4) Jane King b. 14 Jun 1767; d. 08 Sep 1813.

5) Priscilla King b. 22 Feb 1770; d. 09 Sep 1841.

6) Sarah King b. 22 Apr 1772; date of death unknown; m. Samuel Greenleaf.

7) Consider King b. 23 May 1774; d. 19 Aug 1848.

8) William King b. 05 Oct 1776; date of death unknown.

9) Ariel King b. 09 Feb 1779; d. 23 Mar 1813.

10) Abigail King b. 12 Oct 1781; [7] d. 07 Dec 1840. [8]

11) Rebecca King b. 28 Sep 1784; d. 13 Oct 1807.

The Descendants of Elder Thomas King

Though the date of birth 22 Apr 1772 is not corroborated for Sarah King, the widow Sarah (King) Greenleaf was age 78 in the 23 Jul 1850 US Census for Locke, Cayuga, New York, in which she was residing in the home of son Harvey Greenleaf. [9] If Sarah was born on 22 Apr 1772, she would in fact be age 78 on 23 Jul 1850.

One published date of birth for her siblings was corroborated by the sibling himself: her brother Ebenezer King deposed on 29 Apr 1833 for his Revolutionary War pension that: 1) he was born on 15 Jun 1762, 2) the only record of his birth he was aware of was in his family Bible, and 3) since his military service he had resided in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts, then in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, then in Rensselaerville, Albany, New York, then in Locke, Cayuga, New York, then in Groton, Tompkins, New York (photo attachment). [10]

Though Ebenezer King stated his year of birth was 1762 rather than 1761, for a perfect first-person corroboration, his tombstone inscription reads: "EBENEZER KING, DIED MAY 3, 1841, AGED 79Y 10M 18D," which coincides with date of birth 15 Jun 1761. [11]

Sarah King married Samuel Greenleaf in about 1791; most likely in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, where as of the 1790 US Census [12] Samuel Greenleaf was a household head and Sarah King was living in the household of Beriah King, which included Sarah (Palmer) King, widow of Revolutionary War veteran Consider King, who had moved his family to Hillsdale, Columbia, New York after selling his homestead and other properties in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1779 [13]

Consider King died in Hillsdale on 16 Mar 1786; the presence there of his widow Sarah (Palmer) King in the household of their son Beriah King in teh 1790 US Census [14] was corroborated when they were listed as charter members of the nearby Green River Congregational parish on 21 Mar 1792. [15]

Samuel and Sarah (King) Greenleaf had moved to Coeymans/Rensselaerville, Albany, New York before the birth of eldest son Samuel Greenleaf in Jul 1793 [16] About 5 years later, Samuel Greenleaf and William Palmer; a nephew of widow Sarah (Palmer) King and a first cousin of Sarah (King) Greenleaf, transacted a mortgage of 69 acres between Rensselaerville and Coeymans on 26 May 1798. [17]

The records of Rensselaerville, Albany, New York Presbyterian congregation reveal the baptisms of their children began soon afterward: Polly, Samuel, Harvey, Betsey and Minerva Greenleaf, children of Samuel Greenleaf, were baptized together on 28 Jul 1799, and then on 25 Nov 1804 Beriah King Greenleaf, son of Samuel and Sally Greenleaf of Rensselaerville, was baptized, and finally on 24 Mar 1805 _____ Greenleaf, son of Sally and Samuel Greenleaf of Rensselaerville, was baptized. These two last baptisms are known to correspond to sons Beriah King Greenleaf; born 03 May 1801, and Ariel/Ryal Greenleaf; born 08 Nov 1803.

Greenleaf Baptisms 1799-1805

The family of Samuel Greenleaf then moved to Scipio, Cayuga, New York in 1807, [18] where they were neighbors of Gamaliel Palmer, a first cousin of Sarah (King) Greenleaf and nephew of her mother Sarah (Palmer) King, who had moved to Scipio after residing in Rensselaerville, Albany, New York in the 1790 US Census, [19] and in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York in the 1800 US Census, [20] and then had bought 500 acres in section 84 of Scipio on 15 Sep 1804. [21] Samuel and Sarah (King) Greenleaf sold 68 acres of land in section 73; adjacent north of section 84, of Scipio (sections 73-84 were in Venice, Cayuga, New York after the 1823 Scipio subdivision) in a deed dated 10 Oct 1811. (Aside: the reason for monitoring instances in which Samuel and Sarah (King) Greenleaf were either involved in business transactions, or were in close geographic proximity of known Palmer relations of Sarah (Palmer) King; a proven descendant of Mayflower passengers Francis Cooke and John Cooke [23] and Richard Warren, [24] is that her mother-daughter relationship to Sarah (King) Greenleaf is unproven by means of a primary record source, though circumstantial evidence continues to accumulate).

The deed of sale on 10 Oct 1811 was almost exactly a year before Private Samuel Greenleaf was taken prisoner at the Battle of Queenston Heights on 13 Oct 1812 during the War of 1812. [25] Samuel Greenleaf died from disease contracted during his POW confinement at Fort George from 13 Oct 1812 to 20 Nov 1812 in the aftermath of the Battle of Queenston Heights (photo attachment), and died before 08 May 1813. [26]

Widow Sarah (King) Greenleaf and the younger children moved in 1813 to Locke, Cayuga, New York, where her older brother Ebenezer King had bought a farm in section 33 in 1811. [27] Son Harvey Greenleaf later bought 70 acres of land in section 32 on the west border of the Ebenezer King farm in 1819 (map photo attachment). [28]

It is possible that the family of widow Sarah (KIng) Greenleaf and her younger children went to Locke because Ebenezer King was already there, and he may have helped his nephew Harvey Greenleaf along the way to purchasing his own farm. Widow Sarah (King) Greenleaf, age 78, was living in the household of son Harvey Greenleaf in Locke, Cayuga, New York as of the 23 Jul 1850 US Census, but Sarah died before the 09 Jun 1855 New York State Census for Locke, since she was no longer in the household.

King-23639 and King-2205 appear to represent the same person because: These two individuals are both Sarah King, daughter of Consider King and Sarah Palmer, born 22 Apr 1772. The only difference between these two profiles concerned how the date of death was stated. Widow Sarah (King) Greenleaf, age 78, did appear in the 23 Jul 1850 US Census for Locke, Cayuga, New York in the household of son Harvey Greenleaf, but Sarah was not in his household for the 09 Jun 1855 New York State Census for Locke, so her date of death can be stated as before 09 Jun 1855.

This Sarah is not the daughter of Stephen & Mary (Knight) Greenleaf

Please see the Findagrave Memorial for Samuel Greenleaf, # 89266017, which has a nice Bio stating his wife Sarah King, was the daughter of Consider & Sarah (Palmer) King

Please disconnect this Sarah from the Stephen Greenleaf family - thanks
