David Clark King born on 19 September 1837 in Tennessee in a moving wagon enroute to Illinois from Virginia. He was the son of Valentine King (1814) and Deborah Ann Umbarger (1817-1895). [1] [2] [3]

David Clark King served in the United States Civil War on the Union side. [3]
He enlisted as a sergeant and mustered out as a 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 79th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. [4] [3]
In 1907 and 1908, he was listed on an army invalid card for his service during the Civil War. [5]
When he died, his widow Martha Long collected a widow's pension for his service. [6]
He was wounded twice and participated in 25 or more battles of the Army of the Cumberland. [3]
David Clark King married Sarah Louisa Andrews (1843-1868), daughter of Reverend Dean and Louisa (Shaw) Andrews, on 12 December 1865 in Clark County, Illinois. [7]

David Clark King died on 19 May 1915 in Long Beach, California and was buried in Mount Washington Cemetery, Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, United States of America. [12]

The 1900 US federal census says that Martha King had 4 children, but only 3 were living. It also says she'd been married for 28 years. The child would have lived sometime between 1872 and 1900. [9]
The 1880 US federal census shows only 3 children, so either the 4th child was born and died between 1872 and 1880 or was born and died between 1880 and 1900. [8] [9]

Kansas City Pioneer Died at Long Beach, Cal., May 9.
The burial of David C. King, one of Kansas City's pioneers, who died in Long Beach, Cal., May 9, will be here. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Independence Avenue M. E. Church, of which Mr. King was a member before moving to California 5 years ago. He was 77 years old.
Mr. King came to Kansas City in 1865 after serving in the Civil War as lieutenant in the Seventy-ninth Illinois. He engaged in the contracting and building business and built many of the business and school buildings of early Kansas City. For thirty years he lived at the northeast corner of Tenth Street and Baltimore Avenue, where the First National Bank now stands. Before Mr. King sold the property in 1890 it was a high clay bank standing forty feet above its present level. His contracting shop was on the site of the New York Life Building.
