Biography

Jeremiah King was born around 1783[1] to Nathaniel and Anna (Mead) King in Frederickstown, Dutchess, New York. His family removed to the Town of Ovid, Cayuga County, New York before 1800. Ovid found itself in the new County of Seneca in 1804, and the part of the town in which the Kings lived was set off as the Town of Covert in 1817. Their part of Covert, known as Kingtown, is close to the Village of Trumansburg in the Town of Ulysses, which is now in Tompkins County.

Jeremiah was married to Sarah Campbell[2][3] before 1810, with whom he seems to have had at least seven children.[4][5]

Jeremiah served in the War of 1812 with his brother Lockwood, both as Privates in Capt. Samuel Ingersoll's Company of the 7th New York Artillery, for which he received a bounty warrant, which he assigned to industrialist Eber Brock Ward.[6] He also has a record as a Corporal, which may have been a Brevet, as it was not the rank assigned in his bounty warrant.

1 April 1825 -- Jeremiah King and wife Sarah of Covert to Woodward States of the same place, $1091.54, 64 1/2 acres, part of lot 87 on Cayuga Lake. Witness: Levi Wheeler.[7]
2 June 1827 -- Jeremiah King and wife Sarah of Covert to Thomas Campbell of the same place, $20, 2 acres, part of lot 100 in Covert, adjoining Jesse Andrews. Witness: Levi Wheeler.[8]
30 March 1828 -- Jeremiah King and wife Sarah of Covert to Burnett Cook of Genoa, Cayuga, New York, $1800, 53 acres, part of lots 99 and 100 in the original town of Ovid, now Covert, the same land Jeremiah King bought of John D. Cushman and Sally R. Cushman, excepting about three acres sold to James H. Garrit and about two acres sold to Thomas Campbell. Witness: Levi Wheeler.[9]

Sarah died after 1840.[10]

Children of Jeremiah and Sarah (Campbell) King (not nearly exhaustive):

  • Nancy King, b. 19 April 1805, m. Ira Brown[11]
  • Catharine Adaline King, b. 27 May 1819, m. Daniel Warren Brown[2]
  • Samuel Howell King, b. 23 November 1823, m. Adelia Elizabeth Warren, d. 22 May 1864, phthisis pulmonalis contracted as Pvt., Co. A, New York 16th Heavy Artillery[3][12]
  • Ann King, b. abt. 1828, m. as his 2nd wf., James Butler[13][14]
  • Rachel King, b. 18 May 1830, m. Sylvester King, son of John and Elizabeth (Genung) King[15]

In 1849 or '50, Jeremiah married, second, Tamasa/Tamma/Tamer (Grant) Rugg, widow of William K. Rugg, who had died in 1849.[16][17]

In 1850, they were living with her daughter Cornelias in Wyalusing, Bradford County, Pennsylvania,[18] and in 1860, they were living with Jeremiah's daughter Ann (King) Butler and her husband James, still in Wyalusing.[19]

Tamer died in 1862.[16]

Jeremiah died 15 October 1869, age 86, and his remains were interred in lot 202 in Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg. The only other grave listed in this lot is of a Harriet King d. in 1846, age 1 year. She could be a very late child of Sarah (Campbell) King's.[1]
