He married Barbara "Ella" Stullenberger on 22 Feb 1883 in Belmont, Ohio.[3] They had nine children
William died on 14 October 1928 in Martin's Ferry, Ohio, and was buried on 17 October 1928 in Riverview Cemetery in Martins Ferry. [4]
The earliest mention of William is in the 1870 census.[5] He is 14, attending school, and living with his mother and younger brother, James. Elizabeth, his mother, is 43 and keeping house. She has no obvious source of income. James is 9 and "at home," which suggests he is not in school or working. All were born in Ohio. His father is not listed on this or any other document with family except William's death certificate. There is, however, a Clark King, Private in the 8th Calvary (I am assuming it is the Union Army) who, in 1868 was "undergoing sentence" in the Military Post on Alcatraz Island. In the 1880 census, William is 23 years old, working as a coal miner, and living in Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio, with his mother Elizabeth, age 53, and his brother James, age 20. He reports that his parents were both born in Ohio. There is no mention of their father.[7]Most of the 1890 US Census was destroyed in a fire. Very few of the records were salvaged. Jefferson Township in Union County, Ohio, was one of those and although it is near Belmont County, nothing remains of the Belmont County records.[8] However, this was a busy period in William's life and we have ample documentation available to us. He married Ella in 1883.[3] All nine of his children were born in this 20-year span. The 1900 census includes all of the children except Sarah Alice. If living she would have been 4 years old. There is no mention of her in any future documents. The family still is living in Pease Township. William is 49, was born in Ohio, and was a coal miner. Barbara aka Ella was 36 and reported 9 children born to her with 8 of these living. She also was born in Ohio. The children ranged from the oldest, Mary, who was 17 years of age, to the baby, James, who was 1 year of age. All of the older girls, Mary through Jennie, were in school and, along with their parents, they could read, write, and spoke English.[9]
In 1910 the family was living at 246 7th Street, Martins Ferry, Ohio. They owned their home, and it was mortgage-free. William was 53 years old and his wife, Ella, was 44. They had been married 27 years and it was the first marriage for both of them. William was working as a coal miner, although he had been out of work for 26 weeks in the last year. They had eight living children, six of whom lived with them, Mary, age 26, Ella, age, 22, Jennie, age 20, Elizabeth, age 18, William, age 15, and James, age 11. All of the family could read, write, and speak English. Only the youngest, James, attended school.[10] Both Anna[11] and Eliza[12] were married and living with their spouses. By 1920 all of the children except Elizabeth, age 27, and James, age 20, were married and living with their spouses. William was listed as 63 years of age and Ella as 53. They are living in the same home as earlier, although they are now renting the rear portion of the house to another family. Both William and James are coal miners.[13].
William passed away on 14 October1928.[4] He was buried in Riverview Cemetery in Martins Ferry, Ohio.[14]
Deciphering the document from Alcatraz[6] is very difficult. Any assistance would be appreciated. I have searched Ancestry and Family Search as well as googling him. All without result. I also searched the Belmont County, Ohio, Civil War Veterans list.[15] Clark King was not listed. However, this list is incomplete and would not include him if he was regular army rather than volunteer. There is a Clark King who married an Elizabeth in Kentucky in this time period. He does not fit the time and place for our Clark.Kline-1865 23:30, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
