Biography

Ernest was born on 1 Oct 1893 in Manasquan, New Jersey. He was the son of Stewart King and Armina Johnson. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

On 14 June 1900 Ernest (8) was living with his father, Stewart and his mother, Minnie, and two brothers, Lester (5), and George (2) in North Spring Lake, New Jersey. [3]

On 10 June 1905 he (16) was living with Stewart B (32), Minnie (29) and brothers Lester J. (13), and George G. (11) in Highlands, New Jersey. [4]

Certainly by November 1908 he and his family had moved to Highlands, New Jersey, as he had perfect attendance in the seventh grade for the month. [8]

In 1909 he was elected Secretary of the Junior Epworth League of the Methodist Church in town. [9]

On 2 March 1910 he was initiated into the new Junior American Mechanics Lodge. [10]

On 15 April 1910 Ernest (16) was living with his father, Stewart and his mother, Minnie, and two brothers, Lester (13), and George (11) on 5th Street in Highlands, New Jersey. [5]

On 9 June 1910 Ernest graduated from Highlands high school. He also had a special part in the ceremony. [11][12]

On 16 July 1913 he took a furlough from the battleship Florida to come visit his parents, who were living on Fourth Street. [13] He returned back to Newport to end his furlough a week later. By then his parents had moved to Fifth Street. [This is an obvious error.] [14]

On 25 October 1914 he married Geneva Wilson (23) in Boston. Both were living at 20 Leverett Street[15] at the time. She was a laundress and he was a painter. [6]

On 5 June 1915 he was living with wife Eva in downtown Highlands. She was a housekeeper and he a waterman by trade. [7]

On 17 June 1917 he registered for the draft in Newark office with an address of 41 Elliott St, Newark. He listed dishonorable discharge after 3 years as an Ord. Seaman in the Navy as a reason for ineligibility. He also listed his marital status as single. [16][17]

Ernest entered the military on (maybe) 28 july 1917 (maybe this was him), 271948 was his listed number, [18] On 8 August 1917, an Ernest L. King was one of fifteen men who failed to answer the call to examination by the draft board.[19]

On 19 June 1918, on furlough, Ernest visited his parents in Highlands. [20]

Private Ernest L. King died from influenza on 27 September 1918 at Camp Dix, New Jersey.[21][22] Funeral services were Thursday, 3 October 1918, at the Highlands Methodist Church with Rev. H. P. Grim.[23] He was interred in Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo, New Jersey, with military honors. Soldiers from the Sandy Hook, New Jersey, base formed the honor guard. [24] [25] On the following Memorial Day, trees were planted in front of the Highlands school house in memory of Ernest and of William Mathews, two Highlands boys who died during the war.[26]

On 14 November 1923, a memorial service in Highlands was held to honor Ernest and fellow military member William Matthews. [27]

Research Notes

There is no application for a military widow's pension so that leads me to believe that he and jennie were divorced before he entered the service in '17. Also listed as single on the draft registration.
