Biography

Catherine was born in 1899 in Brockton, Massachusetts, USA. Early records give the spelling of her name as Catherine, but by the time she married, In September 1926, the newspaper wedding announcement[1] used the less common spelling of Kathryn. When she had her oldest daughter in 1933, she named her Kathryn as well, so we are using this as her preferred spelling.

Kathryn was born and went to school in Brockton, Massachusetts. She attained a high school education at Brockton High School, which is also the alma mater of the man she would later marry, Charles Corcoran. We do not have any direct information about whether they knew one another in high school. Kathryn studied piano, and was listed as a piano teacher in her wedding announcement. According to her daughter, Kay, Kathryn regularly played piano to accompany silent movies at a local theater before she married.

Following her marriage to Charles “Charlie” Corcoran, the couple established a home in Brockton in a triple-decker house on Winifred Road, where they raised their two daughters, Kay and Carol. According to family stories, Kathryn suffered from some chronic health issues and had several miscarriages before carrying her first child to term in 1932. The family rented the bottom floor of the home to other families, a common practice in the time and area, and lived in the top two floors. Charlie Corcoran supported his family as a real estate investor and salesman, and bought several properties in the Brockton area. The couple spent time in several beachside communities during summers as the girls were growing up, including Brant Rock and Duxbury. According to daughter Kay, the couple also traveled regularly to Florida in the winter, where Charlie Corcoran enjoyed attending dog races.

The Corcorans had a comfortable lifestyle. Their girls took lessons in music, dance, elocution, and languages in addition to attending Brockton public schools. Both girls attended college before they married, a testament to the family’s emphasis on making sure their daughters had opportunities they did not.

Charlie Corcoran died at age 55 of cancer in 1955, leaving Kathryn a widow at age 56. She continued to live in the Winifred Road home, and maintained a beach cottage in Duxbury. The author (Carroll-7948) clearly recalls visiting “Nana” in Brockton at the triple decker, and climbing the steep stairs that were just inside the formal first floor landing to access the living quarters on the second floor. The home was decorated in a formal style, and included a front parlor with a baby grand piano, a larger main parlor, dining room and several bedrooms. In my childhood, the third floor was an attic used for storage, but in my mother’s childhood, the family had a live-in maid who lived in an attic bedroom.

In her later years, Kathryn lived with her younger daughter, Carol, and her husband Anthony Markella. She suffered a stroke that impaired her speech in the late 1960s and passed away in 1973.
