Biography

Peter William King, born in England in 1874 was aged 2 years when he and his family departed England for Australia on 9th June 1876. He married Ruby, a girl from Tasmania, but no record of a marriage was found in South Australia and the couple did not have any children.

In 1905 P W King, bag maker of Mile End, was a witness to the marriage of his sister Sarah and in 1920 P W King leather worker of Southwark was witness to the marriage of his eldest sister Elizabeth, indicating he and his wife were living in South Australia. When Bill’s brother in law died in June 1924, Bill and Ruby moved to 5 Light Tce Southwark, just around the corner from Rupert’s former home at 27 Port Rd., and took over the news agency, previously run by Rupert.

On 17th January 1934, Peter William King died in Warrawena Private Hospital aged 59 years. A death notice from his wife Ruby, inserted on page 8, Advertiser January 18th 1934, gave Bill’s age as 55 years, but given that Bill arrived in Australia from England in 1876, he had to be older than 55. Particulars on his death certificate recorded his occupation as mechanic, and cause of death, chronic Nephritis-Uraemia. It noted Bill’s age at marriage as 45 years, and if correct, he would have been married in 1919 or 1920 given his true age of 59 when he died.

Bill’s funeral service departed his late residence 5 Light Tce Southwark for the West Tce Cemetery. Location of interment is -Eyre -21 – East 65. No record of death was found for Ruby King.
