Joseph was born in 1870 in Port Malcolm, Nova Scotia. (Although his delayed birth registration indicates he was born in 1871, the 1871 Census shows him as 7 month old, clearly implying he was born in 1870). He is the son of Alexander King and Jane McKenzie. He married Julia Clarke in Boston in 1901. The 1911 Census of Canada shows them living in Port Malcolm with their 8 year old son Samuel F. Joseph and Julia are also shown in the 1931 Census of Canada as living in Port Malcolm. They subsequently moved to Michigan to live with their son.
