Biography

Napoleon King was an Appalachian.

Napoleon was born about 1889 in Knott County, Kentucky[1]. In 1900, he lived with his family in Gilley, Wise County, Virginia[2]. In 1910, he married Mattie Jenkins, in Roda, Virginia[3]. In 1920, the family lived at the Roda Coal Plant, Richmond, Wise County, Virginia[4]. In 1930[5] and 1940[6], the family lived in Benham, Kentucky. Napoleon "Diddy" King passed away in 1951[1] and is buried in the Maggard Cemetery in Partridge, Kentucky[7].

Research Notes

  • The birthdate on his death certificate used here is too close to that of his brother Lawrence King, and disagrees with his age in the 1900 census as well as his tombstone (which also disagree with each other). Birth year deduced from his age varies among the censuses. Tombstone birthdate unlikely since the 1900 census shows him younger than Lawrence.
  • In the1900 census, he is also recorded living in Beaver, Knott County, with his grandmother[8].
  • He is not living with his father in the 1910 census. One possible is in Sevier County, Tennessee, working as a farm laborer for John and Emma Henry [ED 137, Sheet 9B, 4th Civil District]. Age 21.
  • A copy of his death certificate has been uploaded to the Find-A-Grave record[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Napoleon by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Napoleon:
