Biography

Charles was born Monday morning at 7 a.m.[1] and grew up in Peterborough. He became involved in the family business, Kingan Hardware, at an early age.[2]

He enlisted with the Cobourg Heavy Battery on Dec. 27, 1917 as a gunner/private; he indicated that he was a hardware merchant and machinist with 3 years experience in the 57th Reg. Canadian Militia. Arriving in Liverpool, England on Feb. 16, 1918 aboard the Missanabie he proceeded to Witley, a large training base southwest of London. From there he went to France and served until he returned to England in April, 1919. As a private, he earned $15.00 per month.

At some point during the war, Charles applied for discharge in England. That request was granted on May 13, 1919 and his "proposed residence after discharge" was 371a Uxbridge Rd., Acton Hill, W.[3] This decision to demobilize in the U.K. is a bit unexpected considering his ties to the family business back home in Peterborough.

Further research uncovered the likely reason for the decision; her name was Alice May Shimmin![4] May was born in Douglas on the Isle of Man and married Charles.[5] She came to Canada in 1919 and they took up residence at 541 George St. in Peterborough.[6] Their daughter, Ruth, was born in 1920.

The family travelled to the Isle of Man several times over the years so, presumably, May's parents continued to reside there. On one such occasion in June, 1927 they crossed from Liverpool to Montreal on the Megantic. For that voyage their "last address in the United Kingdom" was "A. J. Hogg, The Isle of Man Ry. Co., Douglas". [7]

Charles and May are buried in the Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough.[8]
