Kingi was one of those who died in the tragic eruption of Mt Tarawera, in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, 10th June 1886. The eruption caused massive destruction, destroying several villages and a tourist hotel. The famous silica hot springs, the Pink and White Terraces were destroyed. About 120 people died, buried in ash and debris. Nearly all were Maori.
