Oliver Kingsbury, A Former Roman, at Oxford - The remains of Oliver Kingsbury, who formerly resided at 624 William street, arrived here on Thursday evening over the Ontario & Western Railroad and were placed in Wiggins's vault. Mr. and Mrs. Kingsbury entered the Soldiers' Home at Oxford last July, where his death occurred. He was a familiar figure on the streets of Rome, having for many years sold fish and oysters from a wagon. No particulars of the death have been received. Mr. Kingsbury was about 80 years of age. Some thirty years ago he conducted a drug and general store at Lee Center, and acted as postmaster under two administrations. When a young man he went west and located near Chicago, where he was married. His wife died, leaving one daughter, who still resides in the west. Coming east the remainder of his life had been spent in this state. He married a second time, and this wife survives him. He also leaves one brother, Milo Kingsbury of Floyd. Mr. Kingsbury served in the union army during the civil war and was connected with the hospital corps as a dispensing clerk. The affliction of Mrs. Kingsbury with rheumatism during the past few years and the gradual failing of Mr. Kingsbury's health led them to enter the Soldiers' Home at Oxford. This was accomplished with the assistance of Skillin Post No. 47 G.A.R., and Skillin Relief Corps, No. 13 of this city. Mrs. J. R. Calkins of 507 WIlliam street received a letter from the deceased the latter part of January and no mention of his illness was made in it, nor has any notice of his death been received by her. The condition of Mrs. Kingsbury prevents her writing.[4]
Research Notes
Second wife - Not much is known about her. They were married in 1858 in Kane County, Illinois. Her name on the marriage record is Almira Pratt. She appears to be the widow of Philogus Pratt (died in 1854), and their marriage in 1848 (nearby to Kane County) shows her name as Almira Hurlbut. The census shows she was born about 1831 in New York, and they had no children. FindAGrave for Philogus Pratt shows that he and Almira had 2 sons that died young.
Other Oliver A. Kingsbury - This profile is not the same person as Rev. Oliver Addison Kingsbury. Rev. Kingsbury appears in many newspaper articles in the Oneida area, but appears to be descended from other Kingsbury that are not of Oneida County.
