Biography

Parents and Birth

Boyer states that Avice (or Amicia) de Kingesley, was the daughter of Richard, Lord of Kingeslegh and was the sister and coheir of Ranulph de Kingslegh. [1]

For Omerod, Amicia was the daughter of Richard de Kingsley, and sister and coheir of Randle his son, living a widow 28th Hen. III. (28 October 1248-27 October 1249) [2] who was in office 1181-1232.

Birth Year Estimates

As the daughter of her father's first marriage, she was born in the time period 1205-1220. Estimate her birth as, say, 1210.

Boyer notes that she was living in 1279 and perhaps 2 Edw II (1308-1309). [1] which would place her considerably later.

Marriage to Randle le Roter

Ormerod states that she married Randle le Roter, Lord of Thornton, son and heir of Peter, Secretary of Randle Blundeville, Earl of Chester. Randle ob ante 28 Hen III. (1243-1244) [2]

Sir Ranulph (or Randle) Le Roter, alias DeThornton, son and heir of Peter le Clerc, Lord of Thorneton, lived during the times of Philip de Orreby and Sir John de Grey, justices. [1]

He was granted the vill of Onston by the Earl of Chester.[1]

Sir Ranulph le Roter was dead by 29 Henry III (1243-1244) [1]

Ormerod states that Randle married Amicia, daughter of Richard de Kingsley, and sister and coheiress of Randle de Kingsley, Richard's son. [2]

Boyer agrees that Randle married Avice (or Amicia) de Kingsley, daughter of Richard, Lond of Kingslegh, and sister and coheir of Ranulph de Kingslegh. [1]

1244: Death of Husband Randle

Randle died before the 28th of Henry III (so before 28 October 1243, that being the date Amice was referred to as a widow in a charter.[3][2][1]

The solid date around which estimates must cluster is the a deed bearing the date of the 28th of Henry III (1243-1244), in which Henry Done gives one bovatre of land in Kingsley to Amicia, who is then Randle's widow. From this we know that Randle died before 1244, but we do not know how much before, and we know that Amicia survived him, but we do not know for how long. [4]

Amicia was Randle's widow by the 28th of Henry III (1244) when she was identified in a deed by which Henry Done gives her a bovate of land in Kingsley. [3]

Lands to Daughter Cecilia

At the time of her daughter's marriage, by another deed but without date, Amicia, widow of this Randle, gives lands in Crowton to David, son of Philip de Malpas, "in frank marriage" with Cecilia, her daughter.[4] [3]

By another deed, but without date, Amicia, widow of this Randle, gives lands in Crowton to David, son of Philip de Malpas, in frank marriage with Cecilia, her daughter. [4]

Boyer notes that Amicia was living in 1279, and perhaps 2 Edward II (1308-1309) [1]

Note that the following profiles can easily be confused:

  • Cecily Thornton, born, say, 1215, daughter of Randle Thornton and Amicia Kingsley
  • Cecily Thornton, b. say 1234, daughter of Randolph Thornton and granddaughter of Randle Thornton and Amicia Kingsley

1259-60 Sued by Mabel Donn for Dower

In 44 Henry III [28 October 1259-27 October 1260], Mabel Donn who was the wife of Richard de Donn, against "Dominus" Roger de Venables, "Dominus" Thomas de Orreby, Richard, son of Richard de Donn, Emma, who was the wife of William Gerard, Avice de Thornton, and William Launcelin' and Joan, his wife, for dower of lands in Crowton and Kingsley. Dame Emma Kingel' vouches to warranty the "Dominus" Edward, guardian of Richard, son and heir of Richard de Donn.[5]

Death

Avice was living in 1279 and perhaps 2 Edw II (1308-1309). [1]

1215 Issue

Assume at this time that the children were born about 1215, thus the estimated births -- Peter, 1215, Cecily, 1217, Alice, 1219, Randle, 1221, Richard, 1223, and Alan, 1225. These estimated are highly speculative and useful primarily for placing a person in the correct time period.

  1. Peter, married Matilda le Clerc [1] Sir Peter le Roter de Thornton, knt, ob 8 Edw I, married Matilda, daughter of Richard, son of William le Clerc, of Chester. [2] Peter's IPM was 26 November 8 Edward I (1279), giving Peter's son Randle a birth year of circa 1257. [6] His son Randle was aged 22 when Peter died. The IPM [6] identifies Randle's inheritance as manors of Honeston and Thoreton; knights fees at Kingslegh and Stanthrel; salt pit at Northwich; 2 bovates of land at Aston upon Wevre; messuages at Middlewich and Cestre.
  2. Cecily or Cecelia, b. 1198, Thornton, d. 1290 Malpas. married David de Malpas [1] Cecelia, wife of David de Malpas. [2]
  3. Alice, married Richard de Hellesby. Alice is shown as a daughter by Boyer [1] but not by Ormerod [2]
  4. Randle, born 1186 in Lancashire. (Birthplace questionable), rector of Thorneton 52 Hen III (1277-1278) [1] Rnadle, brother of Peter, rector of Thornton 52 Hen III. [2]
  5. Richard, prob. the Abbot of Stanlaw, who died 1269 [1] Richard, 52 Hen III. [2] (1267-1268)
  6. Alan of Halton, probable son, shown by Boyer[1] but not by Ormerod. [2]

Randle was previously shown on WikiTree as the father of Sir Allen de Thornton, born 1225. No source has been found for this relationship and it has been disconnected.

I posted the following on the profile of her husband Randle de Thornton, but it is applicable to this profile.

There seem to be major problems with the some of the dates on this [Randle's] and related profiles. Apart from the fact that it is highly unlikely that he would have lived until he was 82 in this time period, his marriage date is estimated at 1190 but his son and heir Peter is estimated to have been born in 1230.

Given we know Peter died shortly before 25 Nov 1279 (the date the writ was issued for his ipm) https://archive.org/details/cu31924011387804/page/n255/mode/1up estimating his birth date to a great deal earlier than 1230 would also raise issues of him having died at an advanced age. Also his son and heir was born about 1257 (aged 22 at his father's ipm). If we are to accept that the pedigree from the Visitation of Cheshire (posted on some other profiles in this family group) is correct, then Amicia Kingsley is definitely his mother and that means her estimated birth date of 1172 is incorrect.

Also with the daughter Cecily, if it was her mother, rather than her father who agreed to grant land on her marriage, then it seems more likely that this happened after her father died, which means that Cecily must have been born much later than 1198.

These issues need to be discussed or sourced further as the existing sources would indicate that Amicia Kingsley is definitely the mother of Peter de Thornton, but adding her now would bring about a Data Doctor suggestion, because she would be too old.

Thanks, John. I'm doing a thorough review of all the Malpas / Thornton profiles right now -- there are a lot of conflicts and discrepancies.

Lettice can't be her mother, since she was born c1200. Perhaps Lettice's DOB is wrong, since she has no listed parents to confirm it.
