Biography

James was born about 1745 or perhaps earlier than that, most likely in Georgia but no definitive evidence has surfaced yet.

He is shown here as son of Samuel and Margaret Kinman on the basis of remote DNA matches between descendants of his and descendants of Thomas Kinman. Please see notes below on his DNA matches.

In 1790 he was living in Guilford County, North Carolina [1], by 1800 he had moved to Laurens County in South Carolina [2] and was then aged 45 or over.

He wrote his will in 1815 which was proved in 1818 [3]. In this will he mentions his wife, Elizabeth, to whom he left 300 acres of land for the duration of her life and also a further 400 acres of land to his son Thomas, his son to pay $200 to each of James' two daughters, named as Nancy Cook (wife of Cornelius Cook) and Rachel Williamson (wife of Thomas Williamson)

DNA

James is added as a son of Samuel and Margaret based on autosomal DNA evidence showing remote matches between his descendants and those of Thomas Kinman, known son of Samuel and Margaret.

The same descendants show no matches to those of John Kinman born c1739, s/o William and Margaret.

This DNA evidence is weak and cannot be considered to be a definitive proof. However it is consistent with James and Thomas being brothers, and both being cousins to John (1739).
