DEATH OF MR THOMAS KINSELLA. AN OLD STAWELL IDENTITY. Very many in Ballarat will regret to learn of the death of Mr Thomas Kinsella, which occurred at Stawell on Tuesday night, from diabetes and heart failure. The deceased gentleman, who was well known, especially amongst raining investors, in this city, had for about two years'past been suffering from the disease which ultimately carried him off, all attempts to effect a cure, by change of air and medicated baths , tretment, proving futile. In 1890 Mr Kinsella paid a visit to the United Kingdom, on which occasion lie was a fellow-passenger of the late Mr Thomas Bury. (“Tom Touchstone") there being a very close friendship between the two. The late Mr Kinsella, who was a native of Dunanore, Wexford, Ireland, was 65 years of age, being born on July 15, 1837. He arrived in, Victoria in 1854, at the age,of 17 years, and in 1856 came to Stawell, and for two years followed his fortune at the Dour Posts diggings, subsequently coming up to the “reefs," as Stawell was then known. With his brother he purchased the Star hotel, afterwards selling out, and with the late Messrs Hobbs and Ronald Campbell purchased the Moonlight Company, which was carried on successfully with Mr Kinsella as managing partner. The Magdala Company was eventually purchased and incorporated with the Moonlight, the mine being then called the Magdala-cum-Moon light, and under the careful management of the deceased gentleman it has been for many years past the main stay of the town, and given employment to a large number of men. The late Mr Kinsella took a lively interest in the welfare of the place, and occupied many public positions, which he filled with credit to him self and to the well being of the town. He was elected to the borough council in 1878, and filled the position of mayor in 1881. He was one of the original founders of the Stawell Eire Brigade, and held the position ,of captain for some time, and was for a number of years treasurer. He also took a keen interest in the inception of the rifle club, was a trustee of the Stawell Savings Bank, likewise trustee of the Cemetery Trust, member of the School of Mines Council, and chairman of the Mineowners’ Association. He was also a member of the committee of the Stawell Hospital for many years, and filled the president’s chair in 1878. He was identified with all the mining interests of the district and his name is inseparably associated with the progress of the town. He leaves a family of seven daughters and one son, all grown up, to mourn their loss.
