Note CN715On a visit to Bucks County from New Jersey, Joseph got into a fight with a neighbor (Joseph won). After that, he made plans to move to Canada and arrived in Humberstone township, in the county of Welland, where he lived on the Lake Shore near Fort Erie and resumed his teaching career. He was very successful. About 1815, he moved to the town of Walpole, about 40 miles away and purchased a 200 acre farm. He is known to profess a deep hatred of Americans, who "had oppressed and persecuted him and his kindred." When the Americans landed at Fort Erie in 1812, Joseph was seised and sent to Greenbush, NY as a prisoner of war for 18 months. Joseph had 7 children and when he was 80 years old, he turned his farm over to his 2 sons Joseph and Abraham. ________________________________ Source: "The Doan Family" by Alfred Alder Doan, DFAA
