Biography

William Ingraham Kip was born on October 3, 1811, in Manhattan, New York to Leonard Kip and his wife, Maria Ingraham. He married Maria Elizabeth Lawrence on July 1, 1835, in New York City, New York. They had two children during their marriage. He died on April 7, 1893, in San Francisco, California, having lived a long life of 81 years, and was buried in Colma, California.

William prepared for college in New York and entered Rutgers in 1827, but in 1828 left to enter Yale, where he was graduated in 1831. He began the study of law, but abandoned it for that of theology, and studied at the Virginia Theological Seminary, 1832-1833, and graduated from the General Theological Seminary in 1835. He was ordained deacon June 28, 1835 and priest on October 24, 1835 at St Peter's Church, Morristown, New Jersey, and in 1835-36 was rector of the same church. He moved on to become assistant rector at Grace Church, New York City from 1836-1837 and then became Rector of St Peter's Church in Albany, New York from 1838-1853.[1][2]

In 1853, he was nominated for the missionary bishopric of California by Bishop Wainwright. He was consecrated at Trinity Church in New York City 28 October 1853. When he arrived in San Francisco, he had only two congregations, but the Episcopalian population grew as California grew, When Californioa became a diocese in 1857, Kip was elected as its first Bishop, a position he held until his death on 7 April 1893.[1][2]

His great-great-grandsons are business people Frederick R. Koch, Charles Koch, David Koch, and Bill Koch, industrialists and owners of Koch Inductries..

Children

  • William and Marie had the following children:
    1. Lawrence Kip (1836–1899), U.S. Army officer who married Eva Lorillard (1847–1903), the daughter of Lorillard Tobacco Company heir Pierre Lorillard III.[6]
    2. William Ingraham Kip Jr. (1840–1902), the rector of Good Samaritan Missions in San Francisco. He married Elizabeth Clementine Kinney, the daughter of the U.S. Ambassador to Italy, William Burnet Kinney. They had four children, three of whom survived to adulthood: Elizabeth Clementine Kip (married Guy L. Edie of the U.S. Army); Lawrence Kip; and Mary Burnet Kip (married to Dr. Ernest Franklin Robinson of Kansas City, KS).[6]
