Biography

This is Aunt Betty to Deborah David who is in possession of Betty's handwritten letter giving family history "all to the best of my knowledge". Letter is undated but was written approximately 1990 to my daughter when she was in high school.

Timeline

• 1930 U. S. Census: Betty L. Kirby, age 5, lived in Cumberland, Maryland, with her parents Ashby S., 29, and Jessamine D., 34, sister Phyllis, 6, and brother, Robert, 1. They rented their home for $10/month. Ashby & Jessamine state ages at marriage were 22 & 27 respectively. Both able to read/write, and family spoke English. Ashby worked as a splicer in a tire plant.^[1]
• 1940 U. S. Census: Betty LouKirby, age 14, lived in Syracuse, New York, with parents, Ashby, 39, and Jessamine, 46. Jessamine was 11 years older than Ashby, but told him she was 5 years older when they married. In this census record, she stated she was 7 years older. Also living with them were sister Phyllis, 16, and brother Robert, 11. Ashby worked as a laborer at a steel mill.^[2]
• Between 1940 and 1947, Betty married Warren Blanchard, a WWII veteran, and had daughter, Linda. She then divorced.
• 1947 Marriage: Betty Blanchard married Norman Kemp on January 18, 1947, in Manlius, New York. ^[3]
• 1950 U.S. Census: Betty Kemp, age, lived at 111½ Blaine St., Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, with her husband Norman, age 30, listed as head of household; and their daughter Pamela, 2. At the same address was Betty's brother, Robert Kirby, age 21, his wife Shirley, 24, and their daughter Sharon, 4. Betty and Robert were born in Maryland. Norman, Shirley, Sharon, and Pamela were born in New York. Norman worked as a charger operator at a steel factory. Betty was a homemaker. Robert was looking for work. Shirley was a sales clerk at the 5 and 10 cent store. ^[4]
• 1959 Marriage: Gardley C. (Charles) Elkin married Betty Kemp on October 31, 1959, in Watertown, New York. ^[5]

After 1965, Betty divorced Charles Elkin, and married Bill Reeves.
