Biography

William Robert Kirby was born August 29, 1850, in Albemarle County, Virginia, to parents Edmond Robert Kirby and Mildred Cary (Thomas) Kirby.

  • 1850 U. S. Census: William, age <1, lived in Albemarle County, Virginia with parents Edmond, 35, and Mildred, 25, and siblings Randel, 5, and Mary, 2. Edmond was a Cooper.[1]
  • 1860 U. S. Census: William, age 9 but recorded as age 6, lived in District 2, Buckingham, Virginia with parents Edmond, 40, and mother named as Elizabeth, 35, and siblings Jefferson (Randel), 14, (Mary) Elizabeth, 12, and Joseph, 4. Edmond's age should have been 45 & William's 9. Edmond's occupation was Cooper, value of real estate was $400 (smeared on film), personal property valued at $100. Elizabeth, Jefferson & William attended school; Edmond could not read or write.[2]
  • 1861-1865 William was 11-15 years old, possibly served in the civil war, but no record found.
  • 1872 William R. Kirby, age 22, married Sarah E. Thomas, age 21, on July 30, 1872, in Fluvanna, Virginia. Both were born in Albemarle County. William lived in Albemarle County; Sarah lived in Fluvanna County. William's parents were E.R. and Mildred C. Kriby. Sarah's parents were William O. and Ann Thomas. William's occupation was cooper.   • 1880 U. S. Census: William R., 30, (census reads 33) lived in Cunningham, Fluvanna County, Virginia with wife Sallie, 23, and parents Edward, 64, and Kary, 53. Also present were William and Sallie's children: George W., 7, Nellie G., 5, William, 4 and Effeline, 2. Edward's occupation was farmer, Kary's was keeping house, and William's was farm laborer.[4] NOTE: Found on Image 29 of census.
  • 1887 Death of wife, Sallie, who died after having 3 more children. No death record found.
  • 1887 Marriage: William Kirby, age 36, married Amanda Thomas, age 28, on April 20, 1887, in Clermont County, Ohio. Marriage record reads Mrs. Amanda Thomas. Image attached.
  • 1900 U.S. Census Virginia: Wm R., age 49, lived in Cunningham Township, Fluvanna, Virginia, with wife Nannie B., 42, born April, 1858. They had been married 11 years. Nannie had 6 children, 5 living. Also listed were William's sons with Sallie: Eddie, 20, Bernard, 17, and Macejah, 14. William's occupation was farmer and 3 sons reported as farm laborers. Also listed were his children with Nannie: Lillian, 10, Vera, 9, Nora, 8, Wesley, 7, and Mary, 2. Family spoke, read and wrote English. Only Macejah attended school. William owned his farm.[5]
  • 1910 U.S. Census Virginia: W. R. Kirby, 59, lived in Cunningham, Fluvanna County Virginia, with wife Nannie B., 51, and all 6 of their children: Lillian, 20, Vera, 19, Nora, 18, Wesley, 16, Mary, 11, and Ashby, 8. William reported this is his second marriage, Nannie's first marriage, and they had been married 21 years. William's occupation was farmer, both parents were born in Virginia. Family spoke, read and wrote English; Nora, Wesley, Mary and Ashby attended school. Vera was a milliner; Wesley worked on the farm. Older 7 children from previous marriage not mentioned. [6]
  • 1919 Death Certificate: W. R. Kirby of Fluvanna County, Virginia died on December 7, 1919, age 64, cause of death was diabetes, occupation at time of death was farmer.[7]
