1830 U.S. Census: William Kirby, age 71, lived in Albemarle, Virginia, with two males ages 15-20 (John Martin, 20, and Minor J. and Edmond Robert, both 15), one male 70-80 (William, 71), and one female 50-60 (Elizabeth, 56). William held slaves: one female under age 10, and one female 10-24. Total number in household was six. [1]
1850 U. S. Census: Edmund Kirby, age 35, lived in Albemarle, Albemarle County, Virginia with wife Mildred, 25, and children Randel, 5, Mary, 2, and William, <1. Edmund's occupation was Cooper.[2]NOTE: Not found on slave schedule; assume Edmond did not hold slaves.
1860 U. S. Census: Edmund Kirby, age 40, lived in District 2, Buckingham, Virginia with wife named as Elizabeth, 35, and children Jefferson (Randel), 14, (Mary) Elizabeth, 12, William, 6, and Joseph, 4. Edmond's age should have been 45 & William's 9. Edmond's occupation was Cooper, value of real estate was $400 (smeared on film), personal property valued at $100. All family members born in Virginia. Jefferson & Elizabeth attended school, Edmond could not read or write.[3] NOTE: Not on 1860 Slave Schedule.
1861-1865: Civil War Soldier's Index: Edmond Kirby (age 41-45) entered the war as a Private, Final Rank was Sergeant, in the Confederate Army, with Cayce's Company, Virginia Light Artillery, Purcell Artillery.[4]
1861: Kirby, Edmond; BATTLE UNIT NAME: Cayce's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (Purcell Artillery); SIDE: Confederacy; SOLDIER'S RANK IN: Private; SOLDIER'S RANK OUT: Sergeant; FILM NUMBER: M382 ROLL 32; NOTES: General Note - Purcell Artillery. OVERVIEW: Purcell Light Artillery, completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in April, 1861. The unit was assigned to R.L. Walker's and W.J. Pegram's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. It participated in many campaigns from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, was involved in the operations against Petersburg and Richmond, and saw action around Appomattox. The battery reported 7 killed and 53 wounded during the Seven Days' Battles, and lost seven percent of the 89 engaged at Gettysburg. It was included in the surrender on April 9, 1865 (of Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant, Appomatox Court House, Virginia). Its captains were George M. Cayce, William J. Pegram, and R. Lindsay Walker.[5]
1862: "The Richmond Daily Dispatch: July 24, 1862; Purcell Battery --This splendid artillery corps left its encampment at the Fair Grounds, near this city, yesterday, and took up its line of march for the army. It initiated the recent actions before Richmond, and out of 90 members carried into action, brought out 30 alive and unwounded."
1880 U. S. Census: Edward (sic), 64, lived in Cunningham, Fluvanna County, Virginia with wife Kary (sic), 53, and son William R., 33, his wife Sallie, 23, and their children George W., 7, Nellie G., 5, William, 4 and Effeline, 2. Edward's occupation was farmer, Kary's was keeping house, and William's was farm laborer [6]
