Washington Kirk - Born on Jun 4 1818 in Pennsylvania to Hon. Jacob Kirk, Esq. (son of Isaac Kirk and Martha Garretson Kirk) & Catherine Elizabeth Kline (daughter of John Kline and Catherine Elizabeth Ensminger Kline)

Washington Kirk was a merchant in New Market, Pennsylvania and enjoyed the benefit of many friends and a good business reputation.

1850 US Census - 1850 Pennsylvania- Fairview/New Market, York County, PA; includes son Jacob Kirk

1860 US Census - 1860 Pennsylvania - Fairview township, York County, Pennsylvania census has him listed as Washington Kirk, Esq 42 years old, (born c 1818?) a store keeper, with real estate value at $2,000 and personal estate value as $9,000. The script looks like it says that Mary E. Kirk was born in Ireland but she was born in Illinois. WHY ESQ? Were professors called Esq?

1870 US Census - June 1, 1870 - Pennsylvania - Washington Kirk is included on this census despite his death 7 weeks prior to the date on the census.

His headstone says he died April 15, 1870 and his death certificate says April 15, 1870, but a census dated August of 1870 has him still living. Ignore the date on the census.
