James Kirkbride was born in the 8th September 1860, at Shildon, County Durham, England, the third child, second son, of Alexander Kirkbride and Esther Alderson, and christened on the 20th September.[1] James had two older siblings, Mary Elizabeth (1856–1934), and Thomas (1859–1865), and five known younger: Esther (1862–1933), Barnett (1864–1881), Thomas (1866–1902), Margaret Hannah (1873–1944), Alexander (1875–1964).
On the 7th April 1861 James (not even a year old) was living with his family at Whitfield Place, Shildon. Others home at the time were his father, Alexander (25, a coal miner), his mother, Esther (26), and his older siblings, Mary Elizabeth (4), and Thomas (2).[2]
In 1865 James's older brother Thomas died aged just barely 5 years of age.
In 1866 a new baby, another boy, joined the family and was named Thomas for the little boy who had just died the year before.
On the 2nd April 1871 James (10, a scholar) was living with his family, still in Shildon. Others home at the time were his father, Alexander (43, still a coal miner), his mother, Esther (35), and his siblings, Mary (14, a scholar), Esther (9, a scholar), Barnett (7, a scholar), and Thomas (5, a scholar).[3]
On the 3rd April 1881 James (20, now a coal miner) was living with his family at Goundry Or Jacobs Row (so says the record). Others home at the time were his father, Alexander (55, still a coal miner), his mother, Esther (45), and his siblings, Mary (24), Thomas (15, already a coal miner), Margaret Hannah (8, a scholar), and the youngest, Alexander (5).[4] It seems likely that this was where he and his future wife met, as the Marsden family were also living at "Goundry Or Jacobs Row" at this time.
In 1893 James (33) married Catherine Marsden (28), the second, and younger, daughter of Jonathan Marsden and Jane Tait, at Shildon, Durham.[5]
Over the next ten years James and Catherine had five known children, three daughters (one lived less than a year, another just barely a year) and two sons:
On the 31st March 1901 James (40, a coal miner hewer) was living at Shildon, Durham. Others of the family home at the time were his wife, Catherine (36), and their children, Alexander (3), and Jonathan (1).[6]
On the 2nd April 1911 James (50, a miner hewer) was living with his family at Shildon, Durham. Others home at the time were his wife, Catherine (46), and their children, Alexander (13, at school), Jonathan Marsden (11, at school), and Alice (8, at school). Also resident, listed as a boarder, was Catherine's father, Jonathan Marsden (77, noted as a pensioned miner hewer).[7]
James and Catherine celebrated 30 years of marriage in 1923.
Less than a year after celebrating their pearl wedding anniversary, James's wife Catherine died in the early part of 1924, at Shildon, aged just 59 years.[8]
James Kirkbride passed away on the 6th April 1933, at Shildon, County Durham, England, just five months before his 73rd birthday.[9]
Probate administration shows James left effects to the value of £223 to his son Alexander.[10]
