Biography

James was born about 1722. based on his being age 30 when he married in 1752. He died in 1782.

Marriage and children

In a marriage bond dated 11 April 1752 in Cockerham, Lancashire, England[1] James Kirkby of Cockerham, yeoman, and Henry Ball of Winmarley (probably Winmarleigh), husbandman, pledged 200 pounds that James Kirkby and Deborah Lamb of Ellell, spinster, were legally able to marry and that they would marry in the parish church of Cockerham or chapel of Ellell. His age was given as 30 years and hers as 26. James married Deborah Lamb on 21 April 1752 in Cockerham, Lancashire, England.[2] Both were from the Cockerham parish.

Six children have been identified: Margaret, Isabel, William, Deborah, Thomas (who died young in 1764), and Thomas.

Will, death, and burial

His will, dated 6 September 1782, left to his son William "the Farm I now hold under the Honorable Francis Charteris Esquire situate in Cockerham aforesaid and called Cockerham Hall," provided for the support of his wife, and disposed of the estate in equal parts to "my Sons William and Thomas and Daughters Margaret Isabel and Deborah." William Lamb and Joseph Parkinson were appointed joint executors. The will was witnessed by James Parkinson, Isaac Fox, and Thomas Corless.

James was buried on 8 April 1782 in Cockerham, Lancashire, England.[3]

The burial date (8 April 1782) is before the date of the will (6 September 1782), so one of the two dates must be in error.
