Biography

This profile is part of the Kirkland Name Study.

David "Ernest" Kirkland was born in July of 1887 in Texas. His father passed away in 1899 and his mother soon after in 1900. After the death of his parents he (and four siblings) are listed living with his uncle; William Kirkland in Angelina, Texas on the 1900 Census.[1] His date of birth is verified on his United States World War I Draft Registration Card in which he states he was born in Groveton, Texas and describes himself as being tall with a medium build with brown eyes and black hair.[2]

Records indicate that he did enlist in the military (SGT, US ARMY, WWI). He was inducted at Lufkin, Texas on February 22, 1918 and served in 165 Dep Brigade until September 12, 1918 and then the Utilities Division QMC Camp until his discharge. He went in as a Private, was promoted to Corporal on November 14, 1918, and was promoted again to Sergeant on December 10, 1918. He was honorably discharged on March 24, 1919.[3] According to the United States, Veterans Administration Master Index his service serial number was 2-243-564.[4]

On the 1920 Census he is listed in the home of his brother-in-law; Ralph Muckelroy.[5] At this time no further census records have been located and a marriage record has not been found; but he did marry at some point because his death certificate[6] indicates that he was widowed[7] at the time of his death. He passed away in June of 1973[8] at the age of 85 and was buried with military honors in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Harris County, Texas.[9]
