Wilson was born in Alabama [1-2] to Caleb and Elizabeth (Kirkland) Kirkland. He worked on his father's farm until May of 1862. W. R. Kirkland served as a Private in Company I, 46th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted at age 22 on May 10, 1862 at Columbia, Alabama. On May 1st he was wounded at Port Gibson, Mississippi where his unit suffered greatly. He died on May 23rd and was buried in Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson.
