Hamilton Speirs Kirkland was born in Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales in November 1894. He was the son of Dr Thomas Speirs Kirkland and his wife Helena (nee Pickard). Dr. Hamilton Kirkland was a keen yachtsmen who successfully competed in the 28ft Prince class on Sydney Harbour in the interwar years.
Captain Hamilton Speirs Kirkland enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 8 February 1918. His Next of Kin was listed as his father, Dr T S Kirkland of 231 Macquarie Street, Sydney, New South Wales. He was assigned to the Australian Army Medical Corps and embarked on the HMAT Osterley in May 1918 from Sydney Australia (not on board HMAT A47 Mashobra on 5 April 1916 as some records suggest) and disembarking at Liverpool in England on the 10th of July 1918. Captain Kirland Date returned to Australia on the 9th of January 1920.Dr. Hamilton Speirs Kirkland married Miss Mildred J. Dowling in Sydney in New South Wales Australia in 1927.
