[Note: The Ancestry page says that the 1880 census lists him as 33 years old, but the image of the original handwritten page (image attached) clearly shows 38. This still wouldn't match his birthday as seen on the headstone--he should have been 42 in 1880. However, a plausible explanation is that the census-taker asked him his age and he replied, or the census-taker wrote down, his birth year, "'38", instead of his age. The census shows his wife and three kids, all living in Coahoma county, MS, all with names and ages that match the headstones surrounding John's in the same cemetery in Coahoma county, MS, so it's incredibly unlikely to be the wrong person.]

There is another Ancestry.com page purporting to be this person, but the Civil War information found on it doesn't check out:

That page states: "Military 1865 About Age: 27 Civil War Battery F, 2nd Aux.-6th Div., 17th Company, Union Army - TN or KY"

However, when FindAGrave user Martha Reid 19 UDC (#47314198) helped check this, they wrote: "The military info listed is not for a 1861-1865 Union or Confederate regiment. I search union records for TN & KY and found a record for John T. Kirkland, age 29 in Company B, 19th Kentucky Infantry but he died of pneumonia on 04 Feb 1862. I did not find anything in the 17th regiment for TN or KY. The military service listed looks like it is for the Spanish American, WWI etc. During the Civil War, Union or Confederate, Company is alphabetic ex: A, B, C, etc. and regiment is a number such as 17th regiment, Tennessee Cavalry. The military info listed as Civil War is incorrect."
