When William Riley Kirkland was born in January 1835 in Terre Haute, Indiana, his father, Alexander Kirkland, was 40 and his mother, Gertrude, was 32. He married Nellie Marie O'Niel on April 2, 1868, in Adel, Iowa. They had five children in 15 years. He died on June 13, 1919, in Ellensburg, Washington, having lived a long life of 84 years.
